We are currently looking for an Energy Delivery Apprenticeship Training Supervisor to join our Regional Operations team in a Permanent position. Reporting to the Training Manager, you will be responsible for assisting in the execution of Apprenticeship and Training needs of Regional Operations.


Key elements of this role include:

Accountabilities:

  • As the Energy Delivery Apprenticeship Training Supervisor, you will ensure the safe and effective utilization of human resources and material resources for the provision of excellent electric service to customers in your area. You will ensure Nova Scotia Power's standards for customer service are met or exceeded by utilizing a skilled workforce to complete operating, maintenance, and construction activities in an efficient and cost-effective manner.
  • As the successful applicant, you will be required to travel & work throughout the province based on the business requirements to ensure the success of the ED Corporate Training Program. You will establish a mutually supportive working relationship with other ED field supervisors, regional and business administration support groups, external business contacts and planning workgroups.
  • You will be responsible for the safety performance of the business unit areas under your influence by following the safety programs, conducting accident investigations, and ensuring that employees work safely, and the public is protected. You will be accountable for environmental performance as it relates to the environmental management system processes and initiatives.
  • The ED Apprenticeship Training Supervisor will maintain good labour relations and employee morale by identifying training and development opportunities; ensure vehicles and tools are properly operated and maintained; maintain a current knowledge of rates, regulations, policies, procedures, practices, standards, and collective agreements. You will assist in the preparation of budgets and financial projections and will implement cost control measures. You must be available for rotational supervisory standby. You must demonstrate your ongoing personal commitment to the Capabilities Development Process.

As The Apprenticeship Training Supervisor, you will work to ensure the below duties are completed. The Training Manager may designate additional requirements as required:

  • Assist in developing and implementing various continuous improvement training initiatives/programs for all Apprentice PLT employees.
  • Work with NSPI Safety Team, ensure integration and implementation of all Safety related training initiatives throughout the PLT Apprenticeship.
  • Work with all Regional Operations management teams to ensure the safety of the apprentices throughout the program.
  • Complete safety observations, mentoring and coaching to PLT Apprentices.
  • Assist with PLT Apprentice performance reviews, soliciting feedback from Field level Lead Hands and Regional Operations Supervisors.
  • Work with Technician Leads across the province to ensure PLT apprentices are completing the required competency-based training.
  • Assist in determining PLT apprentice's rotation schedules with Regional Operations Supervisors to ensure appropriate work experiences are provided.
  • Continue to advance the effectiveness of the PLT Apprenticeship training content.
  • Participate in the PLT Joint Apprenticeship Committee.
  • Work with the Energy Delivery Planning Services team to manage the 1st year PLT apprentice crew work schedule.
  • Support the PLTs leading the 1st year apprentice crew/s.
  • Ensure the PLT apprentice crew has all the necessary tools, equipment, and trucks to execute their work plan.
  • Conduct all 1st year PLT apprentice evaluations during the first 12 months while on the apprentice crew/s.
  • Assist in the delivery of all safety and training orientations required for new PLT apprentice hires.
  • Support storm restoration efforts
  • Assist Training Manager, Regional Operations, with any additional training or operational requirements.

This position is considered a safety sensitive position. As such, the successful candidate must comply with the Emera Alcohol and Drug Policy which requires a confidential pre-employment alcohol and drug test in accordance with the Emera Alcohol and Drug Procedure.


These skills will make you successful:

To thrive in this role, you recognize yourself in most of the following competencies and skills listed below:

  • Grade 12 education or equivalent.
  • A Red Seal PLT Certificate or a certificate in the Electrical trade and/or a Certificate in Engineering Technology and/or Certificate as an Electrical Technician would be preferred.
  • 1-3 years' experience in developing and facilitating adult training would be considered an asset.
  • Previous supervision of crews or external contractors is required.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated negotiation, communication, organizational and leadership capabilities.
  • Adaptable to change and a self-motivated individual who is committed to optimizing the work management and scheduling processes.
  • Good working knowledge of computers, knowledge of the work management and scheduling system, and experience in electrical overhead and underground distribution operations would be preferred.
  • Previous supervision of crews or external contractors is required.
  • Experience in planning operations and dispatching would be an asset.
