Not only is the department responsible for managing over 18,000 kilometers of provincial highways, it also manages the planning, design and construction of hospitals, schools and other government buildings.

What you will do

The Design Branch is seeking an individual to join the Highway Design Unit as a Highway Design Engineering Technologist. Reporting to the Design Manager, the successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • preparing and reviewing engineering contract documents such as plans, technical specifications, quantity calculations, estimates, tenders, electronic deliverables and shop drawings;
  • performing complex paving and grading design work of structures and hydraulics;
  • providing technical support to design and project engineers, consultants, and other stakeholders involved in the design process;
  • periodically collecting and processing field data;
  • assisting with the coordination of engineering consultants engaged in highway design projects.

Work environment:

  • Office location: 440 King Street, Fredericton.
  • Standard hours of work: Monday – Friday
  • Some travel within the province.
  • Site inspections and field work.
  • Extended hours of work frequently required.

Essential Qualifications:

Engineering and Field Level VII:

  • A two (2) year post?secondary diploma in a Civil Engineering Technology program with a minimum of six (6) years of highway design experience.
  • Must be a member, or be eligible for membership, in the New Brunswick Society of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists.
  • Advanced technical knowledge of geometric highway design.
  • Strong technical understanding of Transportation Association of Canada's (TAC) Geometric Design Guide for Canadian Roads.
  • Comfortable working in a computerized environment with strong technical understanding of computer aided drafting and design.
  • Valid Class 5 driver's license as issued by the Province of New Brunswick.

If there are no applicants with the above essential qualifications, we may consider applicants with the following qualifications and appoint at a lower classification.

Engineering and Field Level VI:

  • A two (2) year post?secondary diploma in a Civil Engineering Technology program with a minimum of five (5) years of highway design experience.
  • Must be a member, or be eligible for membership, in the New Brunswick Society of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists.
  • Good working technical knowledge of geometric highway design.
  • Good technical understanding of Transportation Association of Canada's (TAC) Geometric Design Guide for Canadian Roads.
  • Comfortable working in a computerized environment with strong technical understanding of computer aided drafting and design.
  • Valid Class 5 driver's license as issued by the Province of New Brunswick.

Engineering and Field Level V:

  • A two (2) year post?secondary diploma in a Civil Engineering Technology program with a minimum of four (4) years of highway design experience.
  • Must be a member, or be eligible for membership, in the New Brunswick Society of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists.
  • Good working technical knowledge of geometric highway design.
  • Good technical understanding of Transportation Association of Canada's (TAC) Geometric Design Guide for Canadian Roads.
  • Comfortable working in a computerized environment with strong technical understanding of computer aided drafting and design.
  • Valid Class 5 driver's license as issued by the Province of New Brunswick.

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

SALARY:

Engineering and Field Level VII: $2,327.00 to $2,932.00 bi-weekly, based on a 36.25 hours per week.

Engineering and Field Level VI: $2,126,00 to $2,671.00 bi-weekly, based on a 36.25 hours per week.

Engineering and Field Level V: $1,935.00 to $2,434.00 bi-weekly, based on 36.25 hours per week.
