What is the opportunity?
We are seeking an experienced Director, Sustainable Finance to lead the origination, structuring, and relationship management of sustainable and transition financing solutions for Large Commercial and Corporate Clients across Canada.
This senior role combines deep commercial banking relationship skills, understanding of commercial credit, and specialized expertise in sustainable finance to drive profitable growth in green, social, transition, and sustainability linked loans, alongside advisory work with our clients.
What will you do?
Act as the primary sustainable finance lead and trusted advisor for a portfolio of commercial banking relationships (typically $50M-$1B in revenue clients) and prospects across diversified industries (agribusiness, manufacturing, transportation, infrastructure, power & renewables etc.)
Originate and support deal teams with sustainable finance structuring on transactions including renewables financing, carbon credits and blended finance solutions
Partner closely with Relationship Managers, Credit risk, and Product teams to embed sustainability considerations into credit applications and due diligence
Lead the due diligence process for sustainable finance debts, prepare memos that clearly articulate ESG risk/mitigation and the "use of proceeds" or KPI framework and defend transactions in the Transaction Committee
Maintain and deepen C-suite and sustainability officer relationships; proactively identify client decarbonization and sustainability priorities and translate them into bankable opportunities
Represent RBC externally as a thought leader; speak at industry conferences and contribute to roundtables. Share research and advance ideas that contribute to Canada's climate progress to inform policy and inspire action
Collaborate with partners across the enterprise, including Capital Markets Sustainable Finance Group, Commercial Banking Strategy, Enterprise Strategy & Transformation, Sustainability & Impact, and Group Risk Management teams on strategy, framework updates, second party opinions, reporting standards (TCFD, CSRD, ISSB) and regulatory developments (OSFI Guideline B-15, CSR etc)
Mentor and develop junior team members and champion sustainable finance knowledge across the commercial banking platform
What do you need to succeed?
Must-have:
Bachelor's degree in business, finance or a related field and/or equivalent work experience
5-8 years of experience in commercial banking with a proven track record in relationship management and credit structuring
Ability to evaluate business risks, interpret cash flow projections, assess sustainability related risks and opportunities, and write compelling memos for complex sustainable finance deals
Analytical rigor and credit judgment balanced with pragmatic deal execution
Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to maintain relationships with clients and at all levels of the organization
Passion for sustainability and the ability to articulate the business case for the energy transition
Well organized, able to set priorities and perform well under pressure, meeting time sensitive deadlines, prioritizing work and being able to work on multiple projects
Nice to have:
Direct experience originating and executing Sustainable Finance transactions
Knowledge of global and Canadian sustainable finance frameworks and standards
MBA/CPA/CFA
