The Opportunity
We are currently seeking a Senior Specialist, Enterprise Risk Management to join our Enterprise Risk team in Toronto.
As Vale Base Metals strengthens its resilience and strategic agility, this role will be key to embedding risk into enterprise decision-making.
This role is ideal for a seasoned risk professional who thrives at the intersection of strategy and governance. You will work closely with senior leaders to embed risk into decision-making, drive alignment with enterprise objectives, and elevate risk maturity across the organization. This role also functions as a senior Subject Matter Expert (SME) in Enterprise Risk Management, providing strategic guidance and technical leadership across the organization. In addition, this position plays a pivotal role in driving transformational change, shaping the narrative for executive leadership, and embedding a forward-looking risk culture across the enterprise.
This is a permanent hybrid position.
As a Senior Specialist, Enterprise Risk Management, you will act as a strategic partner, trusted advisor and risk leader to Business Units and Corporate Functions. This role leads the deployment and continuous improvement of the Vale Base Metals ERM framework, ensuring its effective application in operational and strategic decision-making.
Beyond technical expertise, the Senior SME is expected to demonstrate strong leadership skills, influencing risk culture, fostering accountability, and enabling a proactive risk mindset across the organization. The role drives alignment with the Integrated Risk Map, Risk Appetite Statement, and critical governance processes, translating risk frameworks into practical outcomes that support value creation and resilience. Operating at both tactical and strategic levels, this role ensures that risk insights are integrated into business decisions and that risks are effectively identified, monitored, and treated.
Additionally, in this position you will:
- Serve as senior risk advisor, ensuring consistent application of the ERM framework across Business Units and Corporate Functions.
- Integrate risk management into strategic planning, operations, investments, projects, and change management processes.
- Develop, revise, and continuously improve risk policies, standards, procedures, and tools to align with governance and operational needs.
- Lead advanced risk assessments (e.g., PRA, HIRA, scenario analysis, stress testing) for critical processes and exposures.
- Provide strategic guidance on complex, systemic, and interdependent risks impacting business performance.
- Oversee risk assessments and treatment plans, ensuring alignment with risk appetite, taxonomy, and governance standards.
- Monitor emerging risks and systemic threats, and manage escalation of critical risks to senior leadership.
- Deliver risk analysis, KRIs, and CCM oversight to support informed decision-making at operational and executive levels.
- Ensure accurate risk reporting and narratives for governance forums, executive committees, and board-level reviews.
- Build risk capability and culture through training, coaching, and embedding risk practices into business processes and leadership routines.
About You
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, Business, Risk Management, Finance, or a related field
Experience:
- Minimum 10 years of progressive experience in enterprise risk, strategy, or governance roles, ideally within complex, global organizations.
Skills:
- Ability to craft and deliver compelling narratives for executive audiences, translating complex risk insights into strategic messages that influence decision-making.
- Advanced knowledge of Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) frameworks, including risk taxonomy, risk appetite, and governance structures.
- Deep expertise in operational risk methodologies, including Hazard Identification (HIRA), Process Risk Analyses (PRA), and Critical Control Management (CCM).
- Proficiency in non-operational risk management, including legal, financial, ESG, reputational, and strategic risks.
- Strong command of qualitative and quantitative risk assessment techniques, scenario analysis, stress testing, and bow-tie methodologies.
- Fluency in risk systems and data tools, including risk management platforms, Power BI, Excel dashboards, and data visualization techniques.
- Expertise in regulatory requirements, assurance processes, and corporate governance standards, ensuring alignment with internal and external compliance expectations.
- ISO 31000, COSO ERM, CRMA, CIA, CCEP). Perferred
- Ability to connect risk insights to enterprise decision-making processes, including the Integrated Risk Map, Risk Appetite Statement, investment processes, and MOC (Management of Change).
- Strong analytical capability, with rigorous problem-solving, critical thinking, and report-writing skills to support executive and board-level reporting.
- Influencing without authority, driving risk ownership across diverse stakeholders, including senior leaders, operational teams, and corporate functions.
- Strong facilitation skills, capable of leading high-impact risk workshops, cross-functional discussions, and governance forums.
- Effective communication, translating complex risk data and concepts into actionable insights for non-technical audiences.
- Systems thinking approach, understanding interdependencies across operations, functions, and risks to propose practical, integrated solutions.
- High resilience and adaptability, navigating ambiguity, change, and competing priorities while maintaining focus on outcomes.
- Strategic mindset, balancing immediate risk needs with long-term business objectives and risk culture development.
- Coaching and capability building, enabling the First Line of Defense through structured training, mentorship, and advisory support.
- Courage to challenge, engaging in constructive conflict, addressing difficult conversations, and holding stakeholders accountable for risk management practices
