The Department of Agriculture, Aquaculture and Fisheries is seeking an individual to join the Aquaculture and Extension Services Branch as a Fish Health Biologist, in St. George.

Reporting to the Chief Aquaculture Veterinarian, the successful candidate will be responsible for assisting with conducting regulatory activities related to cultured aquatic animal health and biosecurity as described under the Aquaculture Act and Fish Health Regulations. Surveillance activities that will be conducted include: marine and inland aquaculture site visits; sample collection and preparation; fish and shellfish necropsies; biosecurity audits on the cleaning and disinfection of aquaculture vessels and equipment; audits of industry sea lice counts; and harvest vessel biosecurity audits and certifications. The selected candidate will be responsible for fish health data entry and management, fish health laboratory oversight, participating in ongoing project work, and for providing fish health advice and expertise to other branches and government departments. Other related duties may be assigned as required.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS: A Bachelor's degree in Science or a related discipline, and a minimum of five (5) years of directly related experience in aquaculture, science, and fish health, or a related field. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS: Preference may be given to candidates that demonstrate one or more of the following: experience in biosecurity; experience with basic laboratory techniques; technical experience in the operation of marine vessels. Subject to the response to this competition, candidates may be required to demonstrate on their application one or more of the asset qualifications in addition to the essential qualifications in order to be given further consideration.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be prepared to: travel throughout Southwest New Brunswick as required; work flexible and extended hours throughout the week, and work early hours, occasional weekends and over-night stays, as required; be detail oriented; work independently with minimal supervision; perform fieldwork which may include working in a variety of weather conditions; possess a class 5 driver licence as issued by the Province of New Brunswick, or equivalent; operate a truck with attached trailer and boat, and operate small watercraft. The following certifications are required and must be attained within six (6) months of appointment: Radiotelephone Operator Certificate (ROC), Marine Emergency Duties (MED), Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP), and First Aid Certificate.

SALARY: $66,924 to $93,470 per annum
