Emergency Medical Care Inc. (EMC) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Medavie Health Services (MHS) that manages and operates ground ambulance, air medical transport and the medical communications operations in Nova Scotia through a performance-based contract with the provincial government's Emergency Health Services (EHS) Operations division and the Department of Health and Wellness. As well, EMC operates TeleHealth/811 medical communications for Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island for the Department of Health.
We access all communities in Nova Scotia in a timely and efficient manner with our fleet of more than 180 ambulances and support vehicles operating out of 60+ stations. We respond to 165,000+ calls annually across the province, which are actively managed through the EHS Operations Medical Communications Centre, the hub of all emergency (911) and non-emergency (hospital transfers) medical calls.
The EHS Operations LifeFlight program provides even greater accessibility by responding to patients on scene or through inter-facility transports by our critical care team via helicopter, fixed wing, or ground ambulance.
In addition, paramedics in Nova Scotia participate in various programs both urban and rural such as community-based paramedic programs, collaborative emergency centres, and emergency preparedness and special operations, to name a few.

The JOS will be expected to maintain provincial operational awareness while providing direction, collaboration, and reports on issues/concerns. The JOS will function in the MCC to enable access to operational information and the immediate ability to jointly collaborate with the MCC and Operations leadership team.
This role will remain operational and will not assume any of the MCC duties / responsibilities. The JOS will be the first point of escalation for Operations Leads dealing with issues or concerns. In addition to the JOS duties, this role may also be deployed as an incident manager to major incidents throughout the province.
The position entails, but is not limited to the following:
- Monitoring of overall system including OLD management and system capacity
- Fostering and maintaining relationships with the OPS leads, the MCC team and leadership, System Support, Fleet services, and LifeFlight
- Direct link to Duty Manager for OPS Leads
- Liaise between OPS and MCC (Supervisor /SCO)
- Host of notable conferences on recorded lines including the 0645 and 1845 shift briefings
- PSAP connection when necessary
- Decision support for complex transports
- General field operations hand off approvals
- Use of AceTech to monitor over speeds, fuel, and battery levels in real time
- Weather/Road condition awareness
- Contact for TIR and other local agencies
- Support and ensure LIF completion
- Awareness of EPSO related code responses, remote responses, and ERT activations/deployment.
- Direct oversight for the CSP team
- Support for the MCC clinical team
- Provide support with regards to ensuring call backs to stacked responses are completed
- Support the PEER activation process
- PCR completion / disclosure
- Other provincial duties as required

As the successful candidate, you have the fundamental supervisory skills required including demonstrated leadership, planning, organizing, directing, and motivating staff.
You have demonstrated the ability to exercise independent judgment and problem solving; have solid managerial/supervisory experience and formal business training and/or university diploma or degree as an asset; have effective written, oral, and presentation skills; display an overall aptitude for negotiation and dispute resolution skills; you lead by example and practice good time management; and exercise a significant degree of discretion in the decision-making process.
