THE POSITION:
Events East Group is now inviting applications for the position of Shift Engineer (salary) with our Property Services - Engineering team.
Reporting to the Chief Engineer, the Shift Engineer is accountable for the operation and maintenance of mechanical systems used to provide Heat, Ventilation, Air Conditioning (HVAC) in the Halifax Convention Centre (HCC) and Scotiabank Centre (SBC). Flexibility is required, as shifts may be scheduled at any time within our 24/7 operational environment, based on business needs.
THE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Operations:
- Programming Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and lighting control computer to satisfy the day-to-day event and operational needs, through the Honeywell EBI computerized system.
- Respond promptly to all service requests.
- Direct outside contractors as required.
- Operate and maintain the ice plant.
- Operating and maintaining boilers and cooling system.
- Complete preventive maintenance work orders as required to include, but not be limited to filtration system changes, greasing and oiling of motors, gears, etc., inspection and adjustment of belts and pulleys, replacement of motor bearings, alignment of shafts, boiler tube cleaning, and related building fixtures and equipment repairs.
- Check all mechanical equipment i.e. controls, gauges, valves, and other components to assure continuous heat, hot water, air conditioning and ice temperatures; ensure the plant is operating safely and efficiently.
- Daily inspection of mechanical and electrical rooms and general housekeeping of same.
- First call to repair kitchen equipment.
- Maintenance of plumbing components.
- Maintenance of motor driven entrance systems such as roll up doors and sliding door.
- Performing the physical duties required to correct emergency conditions such as sewer back-ups, water flooding into building office space, and related incidents.
- To be fully conversant with building emergency operations procedures.
- Weekly test & inspection of fire pump.
- Other related duties as assigned.
Administration:
- Weekly measuring and recording of water treatment chemical levels; add chemicals as required.
Health & Safety:
- Report all safety hazards to the direct supervisor as soon as is reasonably possible. Take action to correct the safety hazard if possible and reasonable.
- Report all incidents and near misses to the direct supervisor as soon as is reasonably possible. Participate fully in the incident and near miss investigation procedure.
- Create, promote, and follow all departmental standards and guidelines, job procedures, and equipment operation protocols to continuously ensure the safety of oneself, team members, and clients.
- Wear, use, and ensure the appropriate use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required, report any issues or violations within the team or onsite to the direct supervisor.
- Report any damaged PPE to the direct supervisor, promptly.

THE PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Education and Experience:
- A minimum of 5 years' experience in physical plant operations.
- 1st or 2nd class Refrigeration Plant Operator - Stationary Engineer
- Emergency or Standard First Aid training.
