The guiding principles of NSCAD are to foster accessibility, discovery, and collaboration. Technicians are expected to provide high-level technical support within an overall framework of inclusion and responsiveness. This includes fostering environments in which collaboration, connection and curiosity can occur. In addition, NSCAD staff are expected to communicate with and work alongside colleagues to respond to the ever-evolving demands of digital technology and creative practices.
The cross-appointed technician provides technical support across three primary studio areas: Textiles, Drawing & Painting, and General and Digital Fabrication. The initial allocation of hours will be 40%, 30%, 30% respectively, and will be re-evaluated to determine adequate fit. Working under the direction of senior-level technicians, this junior-level, permanent position assists in maintaining studios, preparing course materials, providing coverage during staff absences, and supporting day-to-day operations. The role is designed to grow over time, adapting to evolving departmental needs and contributing to long-term planning.
Technical support and service
- Assist in preparing and maintaining studio spaces for classes, critiques, workshops, and open access.
- Support circulation, basic maintenance, and organization of tools, equipment, and materials.
- Provide introductory guidance to students, faculty, and staff in the safe use of equipment and facilities.
- Participate in area upkeep, including cleaning, organizing, and re-stocking supplies.
Materials and course support
- Assemble and distribute course kits and other instructional materials as directed.
- Track and report inventory levels to senior technicians.
- Receive, unpack, and organize deliveries and equipment.
- Prepare studios and equipment for demonstrations, events, and teaching activities.
Health and Safety
- Promote safe work habits and ensure compliance with established health and safety policies.
- Assist in maintaining safety signage and documentation under direction from senior technicians.
- Monitor studios for basic hazards and report concerns promptly.
Coverage and cross-departmental support
- Provide coverage and basic operational continuity in assigned studios during planned or unplanned absences of senior technicians.
- Adapt work priorities according to studio schedules, operational needs, and project timelines.
- Assist in supporting fashion where applicable, in coordination with senior staff.
An BFA in Fine Arts with a concentration in Textiles and Painting, Product Design, Interdisciplinary Studies or equivalent and at least two (2) years' related experience and relevant computer equipment and software (or the equivalent combination of education and experience) may be considered.
The incumbent must have a strong foundational knowledge in Textiles. Experience working in a post-secondary educational environment is an asset.
Excellent interpersonal skills, service orientation, and an ability to communicate effectively are essential. Well- developed organizational and time management skills are required.
The incumbent must be able to work in a busy environment in which frequent interruptions are prevalent. Due to the nature of the equipment and/or materials used, the incumbent must be attentive and responsive to potential safety hazards and take appropriate precautionary measures as required.

Please note that this is a part time sessional position expected to work 27 hours per week from approximatly August 25th to April 25th of each academic year.
