WorkSafeNB is seeking a Health and Safety Consultant (HSC) to join our Psychological Health & Safety Team in our Prevention division. Reporting to the Manager, Consultation Services (Psychological Health & Safety) you are an important catalyst for improving health and safety culture in the province. You provide specialized services, including consulting, educating, auditing, and technical expertise, to employers with the objective of keeping New Brunswickers healthy and safe at work. You are a part of a team of Health and Safety Consultants focusing on the implementation of a prevention strategy for psychological health and safety in the workplace. The strategy includes raising awareness and influencing a culture change in workplaces on preventing the risks and mitigating the impacts of Traumatic Psychological Injuries (TPI). This team also contributes to the prevention of related health and safety topics such as workplace violence and workplace harassment.

You lead change by using a proactive team approach that empowers all levels of leadership in workplaces to improve health and safety programs, resulting in an enhanced safety culture, fewer hazards, and a reduction in claims and reportable incidents.

Your key areas of responsibility are:

  • Providing Health and Safety Services by delivering education and consulting services to New Brunswick workplaces and assisting employers in building and continuously improving their psychological health and safety program as well as building a positive health and safety (H&S) culture. This will help us achieve our goal of reducing claims and reportable incidents, which include traumatic psychological injuries (TPI) claims.
  • Facilitating engagement across diverse workplaces by emphasizing the critical importance of psychological health and safety, through the dissemination of cutting-edge research and evidence-based tools.
  • Collaborating with colleagues and Prevention Leaders to identify and make recommendations for improvements to multiple processes, leading to the transformation of the Prevention Division, WorkSafeNB, and the services we offer to our clients with the ultimate goal of providing excellent client services and improving health and safety in New Brunswick workplaces.
  • Representing WorkSafeNB and the Prevention Division for the promotion of our vision, mission and services.

You, as a successful candidate, possess:

  • University degree in a relevant discipline.
  • 3 years of work experience in the psychological health and safety field which includes experience with general health and safety, business consulting, project management, and facilitation.
  • Knowledge and experience in application of adult learning principles and practices is required.
  • Disability management knowledge and experience is considered an asset.
  • Certification in psychological health and safety or the mental health field is required, such as Psychological Health and Safety (PH&S) Advisors certified by the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) or Certified Mental Health First Aid Instructor.
  • Other Health and/or safety certification/accreditation such as CRSP (Canadian Registered Safety Professional) or CHSC (Certified Health and Safety Consultant) certification would be an asset.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Written and spoken competency in English and French is required.

A valid driver's license, and the ability to travel within the province, will be required for on-site work with employers.

Pay Scale $77,735.49 to $91,452.80

Your primary workspace will be from your in-home office, with the occasional expectation of in-person meetings, for that reason, working from outside the province of New Brunswick, or country, is not permissible.

WorkSafeNB administers no-fault workplace accident and disability insurance for employers and their workers, funded solely through assessments on employers. All employers having three or more workers are obligated to obtain compensation coverage.

WorkSafeNB is committed to preventing workplace injuries and illness through education and enforcement of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

WorkSafeNB is administered by a board of directors consisting of the chairperson, a vice-chairperson, the president and CEO (non-voting member), the chairperson of the Appeals Tribunal (non-voting member), five members representing workers, and five members representing employers. Other than the president & CEO and the chairperson of the Appeals Tribunal, members of the board of directors serve part-time.

WorkSafeNB's mandate is to:

  • Provide timely compensation benefits, medical aid, rehabilitation, and safe return-to-work services to injured workers.
  • Provide sustainable insurance and insurance-related services to the employer community.
  • Represent stakeholders and provide recommendations and advice to government with respect to legislation, and publish such reports, studies, and recommendations WorkSafeNB considers advisable.

Assessments are affected by the level of activities in the province's workplaces, as are the resulting claims. There are also substantial assets that ensure WorkSafeNB will be able to provide the ongoing benefits promised to injured workers through a wage loss recovery insurance system. These funds are invested in the financial markets and investment returns are subject to the ups and downs of the marketplace.
