WorkSafeNB is seeking two permanent Investigations Officers in our Prevention Division. While these Investigations Officers will be responsible for providing support for investigations across the entire province of New Brunswick, there is a preference for support in the Grand Falls area of the province.

Reporting to the Manager, Investigations, you will lead workplace incident investigations with a goal of identifying causes of the incident, finding measures to keep workers safe by identifying training/process opportunities that will promote safety and prevent reoccurrence. In addition, you will identify violations of legislation and where appropriate recommend prosecutions before the court or issue administrative penalties. You will manage all aspects of the file with guidance from our regulatory framework and the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHS Act) as a representative of WorkSafeNB. You will communicate findings to stakeholders including injured party's family, affected workplace parties and other agencies.

Your key areas of responsibility are as follows:

  • Conducting investigations of workplace incidents under the jurisdiction of WorkSafeNB as assigned by the Manager, Investigations.
  • Participating and representing WorkSafeNB in proceedings to present evidence and respond to inquiries. Successful participation requires the correctness of facts as well as being able to defend the action(s) taken during investigations.
  • Meeting with injured workers, families, employees, employers, and external stakeholders to provide resources and present information on investigations. Providing facts and findings on investigations (including action(s) taken and if appropriate the rationale for the action(s) taken) and advising of available benefit services to the injured workers and the families as well as informing workplace parties on the facts and findings of the investigation to prevent reoccurrence of a similar incident.
  • Reviewing and analyzing plans, standards, manuals, policies, procedures, and directives, conducting review and analysis of all documentation to determine if the party involved in an incident complied with the requirements of the OHS Act.
  • Being available for on-call work a minimum of 7 weeks a year. When on call, you will be required to respond to any incident that occurs after hours.
  • Being required to travel throughout the province to conduct investigations.
  • Operating and maintaining a fleet vehicle as per WorkSafeNB directives.

You, as a successful candidate, possess:

  • Post-secondary education in law enforcement or relevant field or a university degree in criminology, science, or engineering.
  • Must have 5 years of relevant work experience including experience in investigative processes.
  • Must have the ability and willingness to obtain a designation such as Certificate in Tribunal Administrative Justice (CTAJ), Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST), Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), Registered Occupational Hygienist (ROH) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) Certificate.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations.
  • Knowledge of Compliance and Enforcement, Occupational Health and Safety and Legislation and Compliance.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Written and spoken competence in English and spoken competence in French is required for both these positions.

Pay Scale $86,797.90 to $102,115.18

Hours of work are those required to perform the assigned tasks but shall not be less than 35 hours per week.

Your primary workspace will be from your in-home office, with the occasional expectation of in person meetings, for that reason, working from outside the province or country is not permissible.

Assessments are affected by the level of activities in the province's workplaces, as are the resulting claims. There are also substantial assets that ensure WorkSafeNB will be able to provide the ongoing benefits promised to injured workers through a wage loss recovery insurance system. These funds are invested in the financial markets and investment returns are subject to the ups and downs of the marketplace.
