What you will do

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Bridge Design, the successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • providing leadership, guidance, and support to employees, while ensuring effective teamwork and performance;
  • providing expertise and technical guidance for design of highway bridges, including structural analysis, load capacity evaluation, and preparation of plans and specifications for tender;
  • reviewing tender submittals, including approval of products and shop drawings;
  • coordinating bridge design preparation by consultants, including requests for proposals, project development reviews, and technical guidance;
  • providing technical expertise and recommendations for construction, maintenance, and rehabilitation of bridge structures;
  • contributing to the development of internal specifications, guidelines, and policies;
  • providing input on national codes, standards, and guidelines; and liaising with the special vehicle permits office and reviewing over-mass permit applications.

Work environment:

  • Office location: 440 King Street, Fredericton.
  • Open office layout.
  • Standard hours of work: Monday – Friday.

  • Some travel within the province will be required.

Essential Qualifications:

  • University degree in Civil Engineering, with a specialization in structural design and/or structural engineering.
  • Minimum of ten plus (10+) years of progressively responsible structural and bridge engineering analysis, evaluation and design experience, including experience with the application of the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code and Commentary.
  • At least five (5) years of supervisory and design management experience.
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of New Brunswick (APEGNB) or Registered as a Professional Engineer with a Canadian regulatory body.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Valid Class 5 driver's license as issued by the Province of New Brunswick.

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

Asset Qualifications:

Preference may be given to candidates that demonstrate the following assets:

  • post-secondary training and/or experience with specialization in bridge engineering;
  • experience involving a variety of bridge types, including making recommendations regarding bridge restrictions, closures, divestiture, rehabilitation or replacement;
  • experience administering NBDTI bridge contracts and interpreting contract drawings and specifications;
  • experience in bridge/transportation structure inspection, including identification and/or completion of required maintenance and repairs;
  • experience in applying AASHTO Bridge Design and Construction specifications.

Subject to the response to this competition, candidates may be required to demonstrate on their application one or more of the asset qualifications in addition to the essential qualifications in order to be given further consideration.

BASE SALARY: $3,552.09 to $4,632.67 bi-weekly, based on a 36.25 hours per week.

Based on Operational Requirements, hours may be designated to:

  • 40 hours per week ($3,919.55 to $5,111.91 bi-weekly) or
  • 45 hours per week ($4,409.09 to $5,750.90 bi-weekly)

Recognition and Retention Premium
The recognition and retention premium is based on written confirmation of recognition and registration with a Canadian Regulatory body.

  • Fifteen (15) years but less than twenty (20) years – 1.0%
  • Twenty (20) years but less than twenty-five (25) years – 2.0%
  • Twenty-five (25) years – 3.0%
