The Province of New Brunswick administers the Firearms Act on behalf of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. In accordance with the Firearms Act, the Canadian Firearms Program (CFP) oversees firearms licences and registration, maintains national firearm safety training standards, assists law enforcement agencies and aims to enhance public safety. Firearms in Canada continue to be regulated by the Firearms Act and Part III of the Criminal Code.

More specifically, the New Brunswick Provincial Firearms Office administers the Firearms Act and the related regulations for:

  • Licensing of individuals and businesses;
  • Approval of firearms transfers (restricted and/or prohibited);
  • Inspection & approvals of shooting clubs and shooting ranges;
  • Issuance of Authorizations to transport and Authorizations to carry firearms; and
  • Delivery the Canadian Firearms Safety courses (non-restricted and restricted).

What you will do
Reporting to the Chief Firearms Officer, the Area Firearms Officer (AFO) is responsible for assessing firearms licence applications, conducting tertiary investigations, ensuring compliance with the Firearms Act and related regulations, and conducting business inspections. The AFO plays a crucial role in public safety by performing risk assessments, liaising with law enforcement agencies and stakeholders, and managing firearms-related cases, including the destruction of firearms. This role requires strong investigative, analytical, and decision-making skills.

Who you are
We are seeking a detail-oriented, analytical professional with strong investigative and decision-making skills to support public safety through the review and assessment of firearms licence applications. The ideal candidate will have experience conducting background checks, analyzing risk factors related to mental health and criminal behavior, collaborating with law enforcement, and preparing thorough investigative reports. They must be capable of interpreting legislation, making objective licensing decisions, participating in legal proceedings, and educating stakeholders on firearms regulations. Strong communication skills and a commitment to regulatory compliance and public safety are essential.

Your attitude, skills and interests are just as important as your area of study. We are looking for diverse backgrounds that bring a combination of the following:

Need to have:

  • A post-secondary degree in a related field
  • 5 years of related work experience which includes a minimum of 1 year of experience working in a regulatory environment
  • Experience in law enforcement, regulatory compliance, or investigative work.
  • Working knowledge of the Firearms Act, Criminal Code of Canada, and related regulations.
  • Successful candidates will be required to undergo a criminal history clearance and security clearance check.

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

Written and spoken competence in English and French is required. Please state your language capability.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: The following operational requirements are also required:

  • Must posses a valid class 5 driver's licence
  • Ability to obtain the security clearance of Enhanced Reliability in accordance with RCMP Security Policy.

Wage
$2536.00 - $3542.00 Biweekly based on education and experience

  • Office location: 12 McGloin Street, Fredericton
  • Office layout: cubicles, or private office
  • Your Team: 4 other AFOs, team of 12

  • Standard hours of work: Monday - Friday, 8:15-4:30
