CICAN Internship Christmas Tree Technician- Annapolis Valley

Casual Opportunity: Research Internship (paid)

Department of Applied Research
Casual Position: Commencing approximately August 1, 2025 (and ending approximately February 28, 2026)

Salary Range: $24/hr

This position is contingent upon the availability of funding.

Responsibilities

What you will be doing…

Reporting to the Research Scientist, you will:

  • Provide technical assistance for projects led by the Research Scientists.
  • Assist with day-to-day operations of a project to meet the research objectives and commitments with collaborating partners and funding agencies.
  • You may be involved in one or more research projects.
  • The primary focus of the position will be developing tissue culture methods to propagate Balsam Fir with superior genetics.
  • You will also contribute to the development of protocols for operating analytical equipment.
  • This role may involve fieldwork to support data collection efforts, which could include both indoor and outdoor working environments. Innovative and committed to life-long learning, the Research Associate is a creative self-starter with a commitment to research excellence.
Qualifications

Qualifications and Occupational Experience:

  • The minimum educational qualification for this position is an advanced diploma and/or a degree in the related field or discipline specific to the nature of the research project natural resources, environmental science, biology, horticulture, and agriculture.
  • Previous experience conducting tissue culture techniques would be considered an asset.
  • Occupational experience that includes crop management, crop sampling, soil sampling, and nutrient analysis, as well as running pot to plot level field experiments would be considered an asset.
  • You are familiar with and comfortable using computer applications such as the Microsoft Office Suite, E-mail,
  • You are comfortable working in a digital environment; you take responsibility for acquiring knowledge about advancing technology; and you are committed to using technology in advancing your work
  • Experience supporting/providing service to students and prospective students would be considered an asset
  • You meet CICAN Internship eligibility: Eligible interns: Between the ages of 15-30 (inclusive) at the start of the internship, Canadian citizens, permanent residents or persons granted refugee status in Canada; Legally allowed to work according to the relevant provincial and Canadian legislation and regulations; Available to work for up to 4 months. Cannot be: Previous participants of a Science and Technology Internship Program; Employees of the hiring employer prior to the start of their internship (does not apply to previous coop students or student interns, although this must be clearly indicated by the employer)

  • You have specific technical occupational knowledge and skill in LiCor 6800 photosynthetic system, Auto analyzer, high performance liquid chromatograph, using environmental chambers, conducting tissue culture, would be considered an asset)
  • You are known for your problem solving and critical thinking skills
  • You are a strong communicator
  • You possess excellent coordination skills specifically related to related to setting up, managing and conduct research projects
  • You have proven records and information management skills and abilities specifically related to working with industry, associations, and/or not for profit organizations
  • You have strong project management skills related to research activities
