Position Details

Context: The Eastern Region maintains and supports approximately 3,500 NL Housing rental properties on the Avalon and Burin Peninsulas through offices in St. John's (Avalon) and Marystown. The region provides a wide range of services, including receiving and processing rental applications; administering rental accounts and lease compliance provisions; providing various client services and tenant relations including eviction prevention, and monitoring, facilitating and administering property maintenance. A variety of programs designed to support low to moderate income households and homeowners are also delivered. Regional staff members are involved in the delivery of the Provincial Home Repair, Home Modification, Home Energy Savings, Partner Managed Housing, and Rent Supplement Programs.

Duties: The incumbent is responsible for installing, repairing, and maintaining oil-burning heating systems in both occupied and vacant residential properties. This includes working with components such as thermostats, motors, piping, safety devices, fuel supply connections, ventilation, and electrical systems, all in compliance with applicable codes and environmental protection requirements. Duties involve reviewing and interpreting blueprints and specifications to determine work requirements and system layout; identifying necessary tools, materials, and equipment; and assembling system components using hand and power tools, including measuring, cutting, threading, and soldering. The role also includes marking component locations, cutting openings through walls and floors, installing supports and hangers, testing systems for proper operation, adjusting controls, troubleshooting malfunctions, and performing scheduled maintenance. The incumbent is expected to maintain daily records of materials and labour, operate a corporate van, and perform other related duties, including plumbing.

Criteria

Screening Criteria:

  1. Completion of Oil Burner Mechanic Interprovincial Journeyperson Certificate
  2. Experience in installing, maintaining and repairing oil-burning heating systems in residential properties

Assessment Criteria:
