The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Specialist Assistant to join our Central Engineering Team in Sudbury, ON.

This is a permanent position covered under the Collective Agreement between Vale and the Local 2020-05 United Steelworkers.

The Specialist Assistant's role provides cost effective Non-destructive examination (NDE) services to Ontario Operations. NDE is required by legislation, engineering specifications and by the plant personnel, to reduce risk to safety, production and maintenance.

Additionally, in this position you will:

  • Conduct NDE:
    • Conduct field and shop NDE Inspections within the scope of their certifications
    • Conduct welding inspections within the scope of their certifications
    • Conduct Vibration data collection within the scope of their certifications
    • Analyze and make recommendations based on the results.
    • Interpret code and standards requirements.
    • Perform calibration, testing and minor adjustments to instruments
    • Organize and maintain historical and technical data, prepare project files and provide written and oral reporting of findings to the customers within the scope of their certifications.
  • Effectively Interact with Operations, Maintenance and Engineering personnel and peers to clarify expectations, scope, and results.
  • Develop and review internal NDE standards and safety procedures.
  • Meet personal safety objectives and contribute to safety of co-workers.
  • Organize and maintain inspection instruments, tools, supplies, office area and service vehicle.
  • Provide emergency support to plant for NDE/vibration issues
  • Must have a valid driver's license.

About You

Education:

  • Technical College Diploma in a maintenance related field (technical trades).

Experience:

  • Minimum of 18 months of relevant experience.

Skills:

  • Qualifications: Magnetic Particles (MT) Level 2 or Liquid Penetrant (PT) Level 2 or Ultrasonic (UT) Level 1 or Welding Inspector Level 1
  • Job Knowledge: Reporting, NDE instruments, training and coaching, Internal standards.
  • Numeric Logic: Spreadsheet, statistical analysis, trigonometry.
  • Technical Knowledge: Codes and standards, acceptance criteria, calibration standards
