We are currently looking for a Director, Corporate Communications to join our busy Corporate Affairs
team. Reporting to the Vice President, Corporate Affairs, the Director of Corporate Communications is
responsible for the development and implementation of Emera's corporate communications strategy,
aligning goals and objectives with the company's vision, values and strategies.
The Director of Corporate Communications is accountable for managing external and internal
communications and will be a key collaborator with leaders and teams across the business including
Investor Relations, Finance, HR, Legal, Corporate Secretary, Sustainability and Environment.
As a Director, Communications, you will:
- Lead and manage a team of six of varying levels of seniority and experience, supporting the
development and implementation of Emera's communications strategy with the goal of
increasing the visibility and understanding of Emera's strategic initiatives and brand across a
range of internal and external audiences. - Develop and execute strategic thought leadership programs for Emera, focusing on industry and
business priorities and our unique role in the sector across Atlantic Canada, Canada and North
America – designed to raise awareness of Emera and our brand. - Provide strategic senior leadership, expertise and planning in all areas of corporate
communications (internal and external) for, and in collaboration with management, subject
matter experts and external partners. - Identify challenges and emerging issues faced by the organization. Work with the Leadership
team and internal teams to recognize internal and external communications' risks and
opportunities and define and execute appropriate strategies to manage and support them. - Cultivate and enhance meaningful relationships with external partners and key stakeholders.
- Oversee communications support to Emera's corporate teams.
- Establish and monitor staff performance and development goals, assign accountabilities, set
objectives, establish priorities, and conduct annual performance appraisals. - Promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a
commitment to quality. - Communications Operations
- Oversee strategy and planning for both proactive communications and issues/incident
management. - Oversee development and implementation of internal communication strategy and plans that
facilitate employee engagement, retention and recruitment and support overall culture - Prepare key messages, speeches, presentations and other supporting material as required to
advance Emera's brand and reputation. - Introduce best practices and refine existing processes and procedures that expand the capacity
of the Corporate Affairs team to proactively support Emera's communications needs. - Oversee the day-to-day activities of the communications department including budgeting,
planning and reporting. - Maintain current and establish new measurement metrics and benchmarks for corporate
communications.
What skills will make you successful:
- Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications/public relations, or related field is required. An
advanced degree is preferred. - Minimum of 10 years progressive experience with 7 years experience in a management role in
communications. A communications role held in either a federal or provincial political
environment or regulated entity will be considered an asset. - Demonstrated experience and leadership in developing and managing a comprehensive strategic
communications plan across internal and external audiences designed to advance an
organization's brand and reputation. - Innovative thinker, with a track record for translating strategic thinking into action plans and
output. - Demonstrated skill, experience and comfort in media relations.
- Extensive writing and editing experience with a variety of print and online communications
media. - The ability to form effective, consultative working relationships with colleagues at all levels and
external stakeholders. - Experience in mentoring and coaching a team of communications specialists.
- Energetic, self-reliant, good problem solver, and results oriented.
- Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills and the ability to effectively
interface with senior management. - Comfortable working under pressure and meeting deadlines, exceptional prioritization and
organizational skills. - Available for on-call and after hours work on projects and issues management.
