Job Description

As Senior Legal Counsel, you will have a challenging and diverse practice that will allow you to refine your legal skills every day. You will work as part of a team to provide ongoing support and legal advice primarily to TD's Canadian Personal Bank and Wealth businesses and certain corporate functions that support these business segments. This includes:

  • Assisting in the resolution of complex customer issues and complaints across Canada, including those relating to powers of attorney, estates, trusts, beneficiary designations, joint ownership, substitute decision makers, seniors and vulnerable persons;

  • Participating in the product development process, issue-spotting and liaising with subject-matter experts (internal and external) to guide relevant TD business segments to workable solutions;

  • Reviewing internal and external materials for relevant TD business segments, including customer documentation, contracts, policies, procedures, job aids, customer communications and marketing materials;

  • Advising relevant TD business segments on senior and vulnerable client matters;

  • Advising on compliance with Bank Act consumer provisions and related codes/commitments, including the Seniors Code, and select provincial statutes;

  • Reviewing and advocating on new legislation and regulation, including through industry forums;

  • Applying expertise and thinking creatively to address unique or novel matters and working collaboratively with colleagues across business lines and corporate functions to help identify and prevent future legal and regulatory risks;

  • Contributing to colleague development within the Legal Department by discussing relevant legal issues or regulatory developments;

  • Keeping yourself and the TD Legal Department, businesses, channels and corporate areas up-to-date on legal issues affecting your areas of responsibility, including by attending external presentations and conferences and liaising with contacts at other banks, industry forums, law firms, and professional associations as appropriate;

  • Working collaboratively with other members of TD Legal to deliver the highest quality of service and

  • Contribute to high-priority TD Legal Department initiatives, including knowledge management and workflow improvement.

Job Requirements:

  • Licensed to practice law in Ontario.

  • Minimum 5 years of experience practicing law in Canada.

  • Substantial experience with powers of attorney, estates, trusts and vulnerable persons laws.

  • Knowledge of financial services, provincial consumer protection, privacy and AML laws would be an asset.

  • Strong analytical and communication (verbal and written) skills and ability to provide advice in a clear, concise and time-sensitive manner, in both legal and business settings.

  • Strong organization skills and ability to work in a fast-paced, detail-oriented environment and manage multiple deadlines and priorities.

  • Ability to think critically and make risk-based decisions.

  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.

  • Ability to interact and effectively advise senior officers within TD.

  • Ability to be "solutions-oriented", have excellent business and legal judgment and an aptitude for working effectively on cross-functional teams.

  • Ability to stay energized, productive and focused in the face of challenges, ambiguity, change or strenuous demands, including the ability to create a supportive environment that helps others become more resilient and productive

  • Ability to create a welcoming environment that encourages different perspectives and new ideas, build a culture of curiosity, openness, and creativity across the organization and the wider community.

  • Ability to work effectively with external counsel.
