Salary: $100,274.00 - $110,301.00/Year Job Type: Permanent Full Time Closing Date: July 10, 2025 Position Overview:The Saint John Fire Department is seeking a Fire Inspector to join the Fire Prevention and Investigation team. The Fire Inspector is responsible for inspection and regulatory work pertaining to the enforcement of Municipal, Provincial and Federal fire prevention related Codes, Acts, Regulations, and Bylaws.
Under the supervision of the Division Chief responsible for Fire Prevention & Investigation, the incumbent serves as an Assistant to the Office of the Fire Marshall and assists in the enforcement of all Provincial Acts and Regulations pertaining to the prevention and control of fire. This includes inspections involving:
•matters concerning all types of public and private buildings.
•a variety of complaints regarding hazardous or bothersome situations
•the installation and maintenance of fire control and safety appliances
•the transportation, storage, and handling of flammable materials
•gathering evidence for possible presentation in court cases.
The incumbent will also confer with civic departments, Office of the Fire Marshal, trades, and professionals on matters relative to fire safety and respective statutory codes and bylaws. This will include creating and maintaining records pertaining to fire, permits, inspections, etc.
The Fire Inspector is responsible for preparing and delivering inspection reports, investigation reports and Orders of the Office of the Fire Marshal, as well as for preparing and delivering comprehensive public education programs focused on target audiences.
Essential Qualifications:Working knowledge of building construction; chemistry of fire; reaction of chemicals, combustibles, and flammables.
Working knowledge of fire prevention inspection and investigation methods, procedures, acts, regulation, codes, and bylaws. Ability to interpret and communicate various National Research Council of Canada Codes (e.g., the National Building Code of Canada and the National Fire Code of Canada), the Canadian Electrical Code, various National Fire Protection Association Standards and Guides, various CAN/ULC Standards, various Provincial Acts and Regulations, and Municipal By-laws.
Effective verbal communication to successfully promote and maintain working relationships with groups, the public, business, and government officials.
Ability to write legible, clear, and concise reports. Ability to maintain detailed records and other pertinent information.
An intermediate working knowledge of Microsoft Office 365, strong technical competency required to use related equipment and technology.
Ability to abide by the Rules and Regulations of the Saint John Fire Department, including the wearing of uniform clothing, and PPE.
Training, Certification, and Education
The preferred candidate will have relevant post-secondary education and experience along with Fire Inspector II, Fire Investigation II, and Fire and Life Safety Educator I designations (IFSAC, ProBoard, or NBCC).
Consideration will be given to candidates who graduated from a post-secondary institution with emphasis on building systems, building construction, or building inspection and maintenance. Additional training in Adult Education, Emergency Planning, Hazardous Materials Awareness, or Fire Dynamics is beneficial. A combination of relevant education and experience will be considered.
A valid driver's license for the Province of New Brunswick is required for the class of vehicle driven.
Must be able to satisfy the requirements of the Fire Marshal to obtain Local Assistance designation, including criminal and vulnerable sector checks.
