The Office of the Consumer Advocate for Insurance has jurisdiction to examine the underwriting practices and guidelines of insurers, agencies, managing general agents, third party administrators and agents, and report the use of any prohibited underwriting practices to the Superintendent; to conduct investigations in relation to insurers, agencies, managing general agents, third party administrators and agents concerning the premiums charged for contracts of insurance and the availability of contracts of insurance; to respond to requests for information with respect to insurance; to develop and conduct educational programs and carry out insurance related tasks or investigations as directed by the Legislative Assembly.
Appointed under the authority of the Consumer Advocate for Insurance Act, the Advocate is an officer of the Legislative Assembly and is independent of the executive branch of government.
Essential Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree, preferably in the field of law. Consideration may be given to a degree in public administration, business or related discipline.
- Minimum of 10 years work experience in one or a combination of the following:
- Insurance industry experience
- Interpretation of legislation, regulation and policy
- Resolution of disputes of a sensitive and confidential nature using formal and informal conflict resolution approaches
- Conducting investigations within a regulatory or legal framework
- Senior management experience in a private or public sector organization, including managing financial and human resources.
- Fluently bilingual in French and English. Please state your language capability on your resume/application.
- Must be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident.
- Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check.
Asset Qualifications
- A demonstrated interest in the fair and equitable exercise of government's administrative powers.
- Knowledge of the Act and mandate of the Office of the Consumer Advocate for Insurance.
- An understanding of the insurance industry.

Technical Competencies: Successful candidates will possess the following technical competencies:
- Knowledge of applicable legislation.
- Knowledge of relevant laws, judicial process, procedures and legal precedents.
- Specialized subject matter expertise and knowledge related to the Insurance Industry.
Conditions / Compensation:
- Compensation and benefits comparable to Deputy Heads (Salary range -$168,740-$222,430) within the Government of New Brunswick
- Travel required
- Term: Seven years, non-renewable
- Office Location: Bathurst
