The Department of Natural Resources is seeking an individual to join the Forest Planning and Stewardship Branch as a Forest Resource Inventory Coordinator, in Fredericton.

As a member of the Renewable Resources Inventory team and reporting to the section manager, responsibilities of this position will include the following:

  • Overseeing and managing the activities and initiatives associated with forest inventory ground collection programs, including the forested Continuous Landscape Inventory (CLI) ground program, the Managed Stand (MS) ground program, the Legacy Permanent Sample Plot ground program, Ground Truthing program and National Forest Inventory plots.
  • Working with branch, district, and regional employees on the delivery of the CLI and MS programs; and assisting with program training as needed.
  • Analyzing and interpreting collected forest inventory ground and audit data and compiling technical reports.
  • Identifying and responding to new forest inventory ground needs by conducting scientific literature reviews, and planning, coordinating, and implementing surveys.
  • Participating in large-scale, multi-agency projects, and representing the department on various forest inventory committees and working groups, at the provincial and national levels.
  • Carrying out various Geographic Information Systems (GIS) spatial and statistical analysis.
  • Managing databases and leveraging scripting tools to aid working with forest data.
  • Establishing, updating, and maintaining forest inventory ground databases required for forest management planning and stand growth and yield.
  • Supervising technical and field employees as required.
  • Responding to inquiries from the public, media, and department employees regarding forest ground inventory topics.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective communication and working relationships with other departments, federal government, clients, industry stakeholders, and rights holders; and responding to public concerns.
  • Other related duties and projects may be assigned as required.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS: A Bachelor's degree in Forestry, or a related natural resource management science degree; a minimum of five (5) years of experience related to forest or natural resource management. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

ASSET QUALIFICATION(S): Preference may be given to candidates that demonstrate one or more of the following: a Master's degree specializing in Forestry; experience using ESRI® ArcGIS Desktop/Pro software, Microsoft Access, Excel, enhanced forest inventories, individual tree inventories, and scripting tools like VBA, Python or R; proficiency/experience in report writing and analyses; knowledge/experience in forestry practices in New Brunswick; knowledge of forest inventory ground collection in New Brunswick; a minimum of one (1) year of supervisory experience. Subject to the response to this competition, candidates may be required to demonstrate on their application one or more of the asset qualifications in addition to the essential qualifications in order to be given further consideration.

  • Specialized subject matter expertise and knowledge in the field of forest entomology/pest management and the ability to apply that knowledge in a variety of work situations;
  • Knowledge of monitoring and forecasting pest populations and determining protection and treatment needs;
  • Ability to use office technology, software and applications, including Microsoft Office and Geographic Information Systems (GIS);
  • Planning and organizing skills;
  • Written and spoken communication skills.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: The successful candidate must be prepared to: travel within the province as required, including occasional overnight stays; work with a high degree of independence and judgment; possess a valid class 5 driver's licence as issued by the Province of New Brunswick, or equivalent.

SALARY: $65,936 to $92,092 per annum
