Contributes to the overall success of the Global Risk Management, Credit Risk Policies in the Caribbean, ensuring specific individual goals, plans, initiatives are executed / delivered in support of the team's business strategies and objectives. Ensures all activities conducted are in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies and procedures.This position provides International Banking with Risk assessment capabilities for the Caribbean Retail and Small Business portfolios and supports all Risk initiatives including special assignments and reviews for Mergers and Acquisitions.

  • Champions a customer focused culture to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.
  • Policy Development and Management:
    • Assess proposed credit policy changes to evaluate impact, both financial and non-financial, and ensure policies are aligned with the risk appetite established.
    • Actively participate in the development of new credit risk initiatives to ensure proper due diligence is conducted to identify and mitigate risks.
    • Ensure changes to credit risk policies are effectively communicated to relevant stakeholders; and the overall impact are clearly understood and adequately addressed.
    • Provide guidance to GRM and business partners on credit policy related matters including confirmation of risk appetite on identified opportunities and clarification of credit policies.
    • Maintain and update credit policy documents for Caribbean countries where retail and small business products are offered.
    • Work with stakeholders to identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency to support retail and small business portfolio growth.
    • Lead and participate in project teams for new product/segment development, special programs, E2E product review, and on-site review for lending practice assessment when required. Conduct post-implementation review to assess effectiveness of the changes on new and enhanced policy, product and procedural pilots for their performance, provisions requirements and profitability.
  • Governance:
    • Provide support to resolve outstanding findings from audit and quality assurance review, and regulatory requests related to credit risk.
    • Manage appropriate approval authority level for credit risk proposal approval and ensure adherence to the delegated authority levels and limits established annually for the region.
    • Support post-M&A activities as required, prepare GAP analysis and recommendations for consideration. Participate in due diligence reviews, when requested.
  • Portfolio Management:
    • Conduct monthly analyses and reporting to GRM and support Director in the ongoing monitoring and management of portfolio. Participate in communications to the countries.
    • Monthly monitor, analyze and report on country performance trends and results in relation to targets.
    • Research data and identify origination, credit trends, and portfolio issues by; product, channel, segment, and specific programs as developed from time to time. Overlay the impact of any political, economic/ environmental, and social concerns affecting the business.
    • Utilize local information, and MIS to gain understanding of results.
    • Prepare communications of risks, successes, challenges, concerns, opportunities for Director review and IB Risk Team.
    • Prepare updates for Risk Management review, Executive, Regional Management, and other IB stakeholders.
    • Adhere to schedule of reports as required, with ad-hoc analysis, supplementary reporting, as needed.
    • Provide insight to trends in consideration of the Credit life-cycle and provide recommendations as appropriate.
    • Support risk stewardship function by examining portfolios for early warning trends to facilitate portfolio performance within acceptable performance measures by:
    • Analyzing trends, and by working with sites to develop action plans as appropriate.
    • Incorporating country knowledge in the understanding of risk factors specific to each site.
    • Monitoring and provide reporting to monitor effectiveness of recommendations.
    • Support Director in developing and conducting communications with Country Management and/or Local Risk where applicable.
    • Identify risk-return opportunities by measuring product or segment risk to forecast and determine whether opportunity fits within the risk mandate and strategic objectives. An evaluation of current and proposed policies, including an examination of processes and technology that can be leveraged to identify optimum positioning for the product or segment. Consideration must be given to channel risk.
  • Loss Reduction:
    • Work with the Director and Credit Life-cycle teams to review loss trends, and develop strategies to curtail losses by:
    • Supporting the design of targeted plans to address areas of concern, by conducting analyses to identify prospective accounts for resolution. Track and measure results and report on various initiatives undertaken.
    • Identifying and address high-risk pockets of accounts together with risk, product, and collection teams.
    • Developing "early warning" reports incorporating O/S, Reportable Delinquency, NAL and Roll Rate data to identify negative portfolio trends.
    • Monitoring product performance, policy changes, and lending limit overrides, with a view to optimize the portfolio by reviewing impact of policy changes via vintage analyses to maintain loss thresholds.
    • Communicating concerns as they arise to enable immediate corrective action, and engaging partners in collections and policy as required to mitigate losses.
  • Growth
    • Identify opportunities to support growth initiatives from Risk perspective within levels of acceptable risk tolerance at product, segment, and channel level, to support objectives in line with risk tolerance by:
    • Identifying opportunities for asset growth and revenue generation.
    • Reviewing policy restrictions placed on the portfolio to determine if they are still justified.
    • Researching credit policy issues.
    • Developing account tracking for policy changes.
    • Formulating credit policy proposals (for both risk reduction and revenue enhancement).
    • Assessing credit policy proposals submitted by IB Business, Product team, Credit Risk Management in the countries or other stakeholders and providing recommendations to the approvers based on authority limits.
    • Understand how the Bank's risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.
    • Actively pursues effective and efficient operations of their respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank's Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk.

Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed in this role? - We'd love to work with you if you have:

  • University degree with a minimum of 5-10 years' experience in financial services with significant experience of the banking industry
  • Excellent knowledge of Retail & Small Business Banking lending products and related sales and operational processes & procedures
  • Maintains an in-depth understanding of key industry trends in credit risk, compliance, operational, regulatory and marketplace environments.
  • Projects good presentation skills with proven success in connecting with different functional areas, partner groups and member groups; an articulate communicator he/she will bring experience presenting at all levels as well as one-on-one.
  • Possesses strong critical thinking and advanced analytical skills to recommend innovative solutions.
  • Experience developing strategic plans and a proven ability to communicate, develop and successfully implement credit risk policies.
