The Opportunity

Reporting to the Director of Human Resources, the Manager, Occupational Health and Safety is responsible for the development and implementation of the City's Occupational Health and Safety program (OHS) which will provide and related programs in support of the City's strategic plans.
The Manager of Occupational Health & Safety provides leadership and supervision to a team of safety advisor professionals. This position has oversight for the development, coordination and administration of the City's OHS program. The Manager reviews existing programs and provides recommendations for updates; conducts safety inspections and audits, identifies health and safety hazards, and orders work stoppage when necessary. As a member of the Human Resources management team, the Manager, Occupational Health & Safety participates in the planning of health and safety programs, policies and procedures, and acts as a subject matter expert in the field of OHS for the City.

Accountabilities

• Leads the City's Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Division and serves as the subject matter expert in the field of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) for the City.
• Provides expert advice and support to the management team, staff, health and safety committees on all health and safety matters.
• Leads the City's OHS programs in compliance with best industry practice, applicable legislation, employment agreements, and contracts.
• Develops and supports strategic OHS management policies, programs, and procedures to effectively meet the needs of the organization. Audits and updates policies, safe work practices and procedures and safety inspections.
• Provide guidance to managers and supervisors in developing and implementing job site safety inspection programs that ensure inspections are conducted on a regular basis to identify hazards and ensure compliance with safe work procedures.
• Collaboration with departments managers and supervisors, on investigations relating to workplace accidents/incidents to identify causes and make recommendations on safe work procedures and upgrades to mitigate risks.
• Takes an innovative approach to advancing OHS principles and builds strong relationships with key stakeholders to promote a safety-first work environment.
• Tracks, analyses, and reports on OHS data; identifies trends and makes recommendations to improve corporate safety and mitigate risks.

Qualifications

• Undergraduate degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Health, OR Business Administration or related field supplemented by a diploma in Occupational Health and Safety. A CRSP designation or equivalent is preferred.
• Minimum 5 years of direct progressive experience in the field of Occupational Health and safety.
• Minimum of 5 years of Supervisory/Management experience.
• Must be self-directed, visionary and a broad thinker, utilizing foresight when examining issues and opportunities within the City.
• Strong analytical, communication, and planning skills.
• Public sector experience is an asset.
• Experience in a unionized environment is an asset.
• Knowledge of municipal services would be considered an asset.
Successful performance in this position requires a focus on results, a service mindset with specific expertise and knowledge of current and innovative approaches to occupational health and safety. Must have strong interpersonal, organizational, project management and execution skills to ensure successful delivery and implementation of the City's commitment to a safety-first work environment.
The position is considered Safety Sensitive.
A combination of education and equivalent experience may be considered.

Monday to Friday
9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
