CANADIAN INSTITUTE OF CYBERSECURITY
The Canadian Institute of Cybersecurity (CIC) is a multi-disciplinary institute that provides extensive training, research, and entrepreneurial services to the private and public sectors. The institute works closely with experts from diverse fields, including computer science, engineering, law, social sciences, business, and various research centers.

The Cyber Attribution Data Centre (CADC), an established initiative at the Canadian Institute for Cybersecurity (CIC) at the University of New Brunswick, is designed to be a national leader in cyber threat attribution. The centre's core mission is to identify malicious cyber activity by gathering data from diverse sources and employing advanced cyber attribution intelligence analytics. In addition, the CADC is dedicated to training and equipping the next generation of artificial intelligence (AI) cybersecurity specialists.

Standard Work Hours: Mon - Fri | 7:45 am - 4:00 pm | 36.25 hours per week (Summer Hours)

Salary Range: $59,361 - $77,168 per annum

YOUR FOCUS

Reporting to the Deputy Director, the Big Data & Cloud Security Specialist designs, implements, and maintains comprehensive security measures across cloud environments and big data platforms. This role ensures that data integrity, confidentiality, and availability are preserved while complying with stringent security and privacy standards. The specialist collaborates with cross-functional teams to develop secure architectures, proactively monitors systems for vulnerabilities, and drives continuous improvement in key security practices.

  • Define and deploy secure cloud infrastructures across platforms such as AWS, Azure, and GCP, ensuring all security requirements are met.
  • Manage and develop security blueprints for big data platforms, including data lakes and analytics environments (e.g., Hadoop, Spark, Elasticsearch, Kafka).
  • Configure and manage security controls, including firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and endpoint protection for cloud and big data contexts.
  • Evaluate and integrate leading security tools and services to enhance infrastructure resilience.
  • Implement data protection solutions such as encryption (at rest and in transit), data masking, and tokenization for sensitive cyber attribution data.
  • Develop and enforce data security measures aligned with regulatory requirements and best practices.
  • Design and implement IAM policies, including RBAC, MFA, and secure credential management specific to cloud and big data environments.
  • Conduct vulnerability assessments and penetration tests; identify, document, and prioritize security weaknesses for remediation.
  • Deploy and manage real-time security monitoring tools for threat detection and incident response.
  • Participate in incident response, root-cause analysis, and post-incident reviews.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant security and privacy standards (e.g., SOC 2, ISO 27001, GDPR, PIPEDA)
  • Develop, review, and update security policies and best practices for cloud and big data operations.
  • Contribute to the planning, testing, and maintenance of disaster recovery and business continuity strategies.
  • Collaborate with cyber threat analysts, data engineers, and IT operations to integrate security across all workflows.
  • Communicate security risks, recommendations, and technical details effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Deliver tailored security awareness training for teams working with cloud and big data systems.
  • Research and evaluate emerging security technologies, including IaC tools (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation), container security, and automation/orchestration tools.
  • Recommend adoption of innovative security measures and DevSecOps practices.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Information Technology, or a related field
  • 3 years of direct experience in cloud security and/or big data security.
  • A combination of education and experience may be considered.

Additional Strengths

  • Proven track record in designing and implementing security solutions for major cloud platforms and big data environments.
  • In-depth knowledge of data protection, encryption techniques, and identity and access management (IAM) in cloud contexts.
  • Experience with vulnerability assessments, penetration testing, and security monitoring tools.
  • Familiarity with compliance frameworks such as SOC 2, ISO 27001, GDPR, and PIPEDA.
  • Relevant security certifications such as AWS Certified Security - Specialty, Microsoft Certified: Azure Security Engineer Associate, Google Cloud Certified - Professional Cloud Security Engineer, CCSP, or CISSP.
  • Experience with container security (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes) and DevSecOps practices.
  • Experience working in a Security Operations Center (SOC)
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting abilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts for diverse audiences.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team setting.
  • Proficiency in scripting languages (e.g., Python, Bash) and familiarity with infrastructure-as-code (IaC) tools.
