The Engineering Manager is responsible for leading Engineering team to success and alignment within Dome Productions remote operations. This position requires strong leadership attributes with the ability to manage cross-functional teams and motivate staff toward action and achieving goals.
The Engineering Manager has accountability for all aspects of the remote engineering group in support of Dome's goals and customer expectations. The manager will be responsible for all staffing requirements related to the field engineers including overseeing schedules, adhering to operational budget and managing performance standards for the group. They will be an active participant on the business strategy team and will provide input critical to promoting advanced development efforts.
Working with Operations and other departments, you will lead a team of remote broadcast engineers in the daily support of event and content production, including mobile trucks, studios, control rooms, remote content acquisition, streaming playout systems, maintenance, remote sites, uplink systems and encoding,
Key Responsibilities- Establish clear expectations for best practices when planning, designing, engineering, and implementing projects.
- Prioritize workload assignments, while ensuring accountability and a positive work culture
- Ensure training material, systems documentation, and policy & procedure manuals are available to engineering staff and are up to date
- Manage and control departmental expenditures within agreed budgets. Ensure financial and administration management of the event production services area meet time and accuracy expectations. This includes invoicing (freelancers), timecards (staff), per diems, expense reports, reconciliation, costing reviews, daily and monthly reporting with follow-up with the appropriate departments
- Work closely with the Engineering Planning and Support teams to ensure collaborative agenda for ongoing maintenance and expansion of facilities. Maintain common alignment for best practices
- Drive efficiency of the in-house teams while at the same time providing excellent client service. Ensure that all business plans are achieved through effective management of in-house and contracting resources.
- Ensure open, direct, and effective communication is developed and maintained among key internal clients and operating departments
- Prioritize workload assignments, while ensuring accountability and a positive work culture
- Should be open to traveling to our remote offices occasionally to collaborate with other team members
- You also enjoy advocating for overall improvements in the practices of the engineering teams you work with.
- Communicate to other technical and business teams
- Oversee all budgeting activities, resource allocation, and expense forecasting.
- Write, maintain, and align job descriptions for all roles.
- Assemble staffing forecasts and participate in all hiring activity.
- Make sound business decisions based on the overall good of Dome Productions
- Embrace and proactively support organizational/partnership committee decisions and direction holding self and each other accountable and responsible for implementation of said direction.
- Motivate, engage, and develop Engineering talent and supervision through coaching, internal promotions, and outside hiring
- Show dedication to implementing good engineering practices, and be committed to training your teams.
- Develop plans to improve the skills of each person in the department and monitor overall effectiveness.
- Set performance expectations and provide regular feedback via informal and scheduled reviews.
- Provide coaching, conflict resolution, and corrective action as necessary to resolve concerns related to performance.
- On-boarding and hiring of any new staff or freelance employees within the Engineering department
- Ensure capable, trained resources to deliver high quality cost efficient service throughout the event production
- Write, maintain, and align job descriptions for all roles.
- Work closely with the Director of Production Services regarding schedules, capacity, and resources for ongoing scheduled production events.
- Ability to streamline and implement new structures and roles that create speed, efficiency, and support rapidly shifting business demands.
- Must have at least 5-8 years of experience working in media/broadcast engineering or operations environment.
- At least 3 years experience in a supervisory/leadership position managing a team of engineers/technical operators
- Demonstrated knowledge of broadcast media (studios, event mobiles, transmission distribution)
- Possess and exhibit excellent written and oral communication, strong interpersonal, organizational, and leadership skills.
- Ability to provide constructive and motivating feedback to staff on practices, tools, and performance, related to leading a team of system engineers.
- Demonstrate excellent interpersonal communication and team building skills.
- Must enjoy working with people and assisting staff with technical support issues
- Ability to manage multiple projects/tasks in a team environment.
- Coach, mentor, motivate and evaluate staff, putting them in the best place to succeed.

- Ability to work with remote engineers to plan and execute a variety of technical projects
- College diploma, university degree or equivalent experience in remote broadcasting industry experience/development
- Occasional night and weekend work
- Some travel required
- In office required 95% with some remote work 5% occasional only
- Human resources best practices would be a definite asset
Adequate knowledge of French is required for positions in Quebec.
