Purpose

The Senior Manager, Control & Sustainment Function is accountable for establishing and leading the governance, control and oversight framework for Trade Finance Operations globally. This role will provide strategic direction and day-to-day leadership to ensure sustained adherence to operational controls, timely remediation of audit and risk issues, and execution of control monitoring programs. The incumbent will act as a central point of coordination across operational hubs to embed a strong risk culture and a proactive control environment.

Is this role right for you? In this role, you will:

Governance & Framework Development

  • Develop and maintain a robust control and sustainment framework across Trade Finance Operations, aligned with Enterprise Risk Management and Operational Risk guidelines.
  • Design and institutionalize the monthly Control Environment Review Forum, enabling proactive discussion of key metrics, issues, and actions.

KPI/KRI Management

  • Own the design, implementation, and monitoring of key performance and risk indicators (KPIs/KRIs), including threshold calibration and escalation protocols.
  • Oversee evidence-based reporting mechanisms and dashboards to monitor control health and identify emerging risks.

Audit & Risk Issue Remediation

  • Serve as the point of contact for internal/external audits and regulatory exams.
  • Coordinate action plans and ensure timely remediation of audit findings, sustaining controls post-remediation.

Control Testing & Sustainment

  • Partner with 1B Control teams to lead deep-dive reviews and thematic testing of processes across jurisdictions.
  • Drive root cause analysis for control breaks and oversee implementation of sustainable preventive controls.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Liaise with Compliance, Operational Risk, Technology, and Regional Operations Heads to align on key control priorities.
  • Represent Trade Finance Operations in relevant governance forums and working groups.

Leadership & Team Management

  • Lead and coach the Control & Sustainment team to foster a high-performance, risk-aware culture.
  • Provide thought leadership in evolving control capabilities using data and automation.
  • Builds a high-performance environment and implements a people strategy that attracts, retains, develops and motivates their team by fostering an inclusive work environment, communicating vison/values/business strategy and managing succession and development planning for the team
  • Creates an environment in which his/her team pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank's Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk.

Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed in this role? – We'd love to work with you if you have:

  • Prior experience in Trade Finance Operations, Operational Risk, or Internal Audit in a financial institution.
  • Proven expertise in control design, testing frameworks, KPI/KRI governance, and audit management.
  • Strong understanding of trade finance products (LCs, Collections, Guarantees) and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience in leading cross-functional teams and influencing senior stakeholders.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and project management skills.
  • CDCS, CAMS, or related certification preferred.

Work Arrangement: This position is currently a Hybrid role. Please note that this is subject to change based on the needs of the business.
