Job Overview
In this Senior Counsel role, you will be a member of the Payments and Merchant Solutions Legal Team located in Toronto and you will provide legal advice that both advances business outcomes and protects TD. You will work collaboratively with business, control functions and with other members of TD Legal to deliver high-quality legal advice and support for initiatives related to open banking, digital innovation, merchant services and payments transformation.
Draft, review and negotiate terms of use and agreements (including NDAs, services and other commercial agreements) and related collateral such as marketing materials for new or changing products or services
Engage in advocacy through the Canadian Bankers Association and other forums on relevant industry and regulatory developments
Make recommendations to senior leaders on strategy and new initiatives, based on an in-depth understanding of the business and legal environment
Apply expertise and think creatively to address unique or ambiguous issues
Assess legal and reputational risk related to new initiatives or changes to existing products and services
Be familiar and stay current with, as well as comment on the legislation and regulations governing these products, and advise relevant business units accordingly
Contribute to colleague development within the Legal Department by discussing relevant legal issues or regulatory developments
Contribute to high priority special projects and Legal Department initiatives.
Broader work or accountabilities may be assigned as needed.
Job Requirements
You have a law degree from an accredited law school and are qualified to practice law in Canada
You have 5 to 7 years of experience practicing law
You are high energy, curious and enthusiastic
You have superior analytical and communication skills both in legal and business settings
You can manage multiple deadlines and priorities while paying attention to detail
You are an independent thinker with excellent judgment who also has strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with multiple partners
You provide advice in a time-sensitive and clear manner
Regulatory experience such as competition law is an asset
Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
Ability to work effectively with external counsel
