Technical Services provides refrigeration technical support to the University and maintains the only cryogenic plant in Newfoundland. DUTIES

Under general supervision, the Technologist II will be responsible for performing skilled work in the repair, maintenance, troubleshooting, testing, modification and installation of a variety of refrigeration equipment and systems for all University departments and divisions. Duties include maintaining and repairing refrigeration equipment such as refrigerators, ultralow freezers, refrigerated centrifuges, and chillers used for experimental, instructional and research purposes. The successful candidate may also support general refrigeration equipment and stand-alone or building air conditioning units, and/or provide support to the cryogenics officer, including the dispensing of cryogenic liquids, as well as other duties as assigned. The amount of time spent in each role will be as directed by the supervisor and will vary depending on workload. The work requires troubleshooting, where the employee is expected to evaluate equipment, resolve technical problems and modify procedures. The successful applicant will be expected to adhere to all applicable safety, environmental and documented ISO9001 work procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience (3-5 years) in the repair and maintenance of refrigeration systems. Applicants must be a Journeyperson Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic. The successful candidate will be expected to be self-motivated and hardworking, and to deal with clients, co-workers and supervisors in a professional manner. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions involved in the work; work from schematic drawings or written instructions; exercise judgement in determining the techniques, and methods required; and skill in the care and use of the equipment and tools required for the position. The incumbent must have a thorough understanding of the hazards and safety precautions associated with the work and possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and internal clients. Strong troubleshooting skills are essential. Experience in a university, college, or laboratory environment, along with prior training or experience in the maintenance and repair of ultralow freezers, chillers, and refrigerated lab equipment, as well as in the production and handling of cryogenic liquids, are considered assets.

SALARY $60,091 - $67,257 per annum (CUPE Local 1615)
