The Department of Justice and Public Safety is dedicated to the rule of law, the promotion of the public interest, and the impartial administration of justice and works to improve the safety, security and resiliency of communities and citizens.

Adjudicators play a vital role in supporting an efficient and impartial justice system in New Brunswick. They are responsible for conducting hearings and issuing interim orders related to child protection, family law, intimate partner violence and other matters. Where appropriate, adjudicators work to promote case resolution using a non-adversarial, collaborative approach.

What you will do

The terms of your appointment may include one or more of the following responsibilities based on your areas of expertise:

  • Conducting child protection hearings under the Child and Youth Well-Being Act as well as adult protection hearings under the Family Services Act. You would conduct interim hearings and case conferences and issue interim orders on procedural matters.
  • Conducting Intimate Partner Violence Emergency Intervention Order hearings. Applications are made on an ex parte basis, and are heard between 8:30am to 4:30pm, seven days a week. These hearings are generally held remotely and require a swift determination period to ensure the safety of the applicant. Other duties include the coordination of service of the order and notification of partner agencies.
  • Issuing interim orders and holding case conference hearings and related to the Family Law Act and the Divorce Act, under Rule 81 of New Brunswick's Rules of Court.
  • Adjudicating hearings related to the Small Claims Act. These hearings are held across the province's eight judicial districts and therefore travel may be required.

  • Office locations: Edmundston, Moncton and Saint John (other northern locations may be considered)
  • Work outside regular office hours may be required
  • Travel may be required

  • Knowledge of relevant laws, judicial process, procedures and legal precedents; and
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office technology and software.

Need to have

  • A university degree in Law;
  • A minimum of 10 years of membership in good standing at any Canadian Bar as well as a minimum of 10 years of related progressive legal experience;
  • A good working knowledge of family law, a broad knowledge of the New Brunswick Rules of Court and familiarity with intimatepartner violence abuse protocols.
  • Must be a member in good standing with the Law Society of New Brunswick.

Successful candidates will be required to undergo a criminal history clearance and security clearance check.

Written and spoken competence in English and French is required. Please state your language capability.

Preference may be given to candidates that have completed accredited training in interest-based negotiation and/or mediation.

Subject to the response to this competition, candidates may be required to demonstrate on their application the asset qualifications in addition to the essential qualifications in order to be given further consideration.

Wage
$158,808 to $190,190 annually
