Job Summary
The Mental Health Crisis Centre offers an innovative response to persons experiencing crisis. The Centre provides 24-hour, 7-days per week, province wide, telephone based interventions for both the Mental Health Crisis Line and Gambling Addiction Help Line, in addition to a Mobile Crisis Team. The Mobile Crisis Response Team is an interdisciplinary team (consisting usually of 2 persons, a Clinician and a Police Officer) providing in-person interventions directly in the community to persons experiencing mental health crisis where and when it occurs. The Mobile Crisis Response Team is an Emergency Service responding to unknown clients/unpredictable situations in a variety of community settings as determined by need and coordinating when needed with other services such as police/paramedics. The Mobile Crisis Response Team responds within specific geographic boundaries which includes St. John's and some surrounding areas.

Staff of the Mental Health Crisis Centre work closely with other mental health emergency services located at the Waterford Hospital, as well as outside agencies. The Social Worker I will participate as a member of the Crisis Intervention Team in providing appropriate intervention in mental health crisis situations through the utilization of community-based mental health approaches. To ensure a quality service, the Social Worker I will participate in orientation and continuing educational events, clinical case conferencing activities, and community mental health research and quality assurance. Following established policies and accepted standards of professional practice, work will require considerable independent judgement, quick decision-making, and the ability to assess and intervene competently and calmly in crisis situations. This position will also include group work, outreach and education, data collection, and evaluation. The Social Worker I maintains accountability to the Professional Practice Consultant for Social Work for professional integrity and practice issues.

Regularly lift objects less than 10 lbs.
Regularly required to walk, stand or drive in order to provide mobile services in the community, to meet with clients and to perform tasks.
Visual concentration is required to maintain eye contact, to consider non-verbal cues and clients' health status when assessing clients, to document information into the computer, and to deliver presentations.
Auditory concentration is required to listen, interpret, and reflect content and meaning back to clients during assessments.
Other sensory demands such as smell are occasionally required to detect possible conditions (i.e. influence of alcohol, other substances, or poor hygiene).
A high level of attentiveness and vigilance is required when working alone and during counselling sessions to ensure safety or to detect impending danger to self and/or harm to a client.
There is a lack of control over the work pace due to crisis incidents with clients and responding to their various needs and to other emergencies.
There are time pressures due to the demand for the service, documentation requirements, and required deadlines for scheduling and documenting clients' information. There are daily interruptions such as responding to crisis incidents.
Exact results and precision are required to document information, to screen and use assessment tools, and to assess and prioritize cases.
Regularly uses fine finger/precision work on a computer.

Job Qualifications
Graduation with an accredited Bachelor of Social Work Degree is required.
Current and continuing registration in the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Social Workers (NLASW) is required.
Minimum of three years of experience within the last five working in a Mental Health and Addictions program is required.
Knowledge of relevant legislation, including but not limited to, Mental Health Care and Treatment Act, Adult Protection Act, Advanced Health Care Directives Act, Medical Assistance in Dying, and the Children, Youth and Families Act.
Knowledge of community resources, systems and programs.
Knowledge of mental health and addictions issues, treatments and available services.
Knowledge of specific mental health approaches including supportive counselling, crisis intervention and critical incident debriefing.
Knowledge of case management.
Demonstrated ability to direct, supervise and mentor students.
Demonstrated clinical skills in assessment and interventions with individuals, families and groups.
Demonstrated analytical, critical thinking, problem solving, decision-making and organizational skills.
Demonstrated strong written and oral communication skills as well as the ability to deliver/facilitate effective presentations.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively within an interprofessional environment and establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Demonstrated ability to work independently.
A valid Class 5 Driver's Licence and a satisfactory Enhanced Security Clearance are conditions of employment.
A satisfactory record of work performance is required.
