JOB PURPOSE
The Tissue Bank Specialist performs screening of medical records for evaluation of donor suitability for the surgical retrieval of ocular, musculoskeletal, cardiovascular and skin tissue from cadaveric donors. Duties include screening, evaluation, consent, procurement, preservation, processing and storage of donor tissue. Other duties include the distribution and tracking of human tissue allografts for transplantation and performing procedures required for engineering of all human tissue allografts.
TBS assist the Certified Tissue Bank Specialist (CTBS) in the recovery, processing, preservation and distribution of human tissues for transplantation. TBS also educates professional staff, the public and families on Tissue Donation.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in Science or health care discipline from a recognized university OR
- Successful completion of a recognized two (2) year program in a health care discipline, which includes anatomy and physiology courses, and two (2) years of related experience;
- Valid driver's license and willingness to travel within NB;
- Demonstrate peri-operative aseptic and surgical scrub techniques.
- Demonstrate critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent interpersonal & communication skills as well as team work & collaboration skills and be able to take direction well.
- Ability to attend work on a regular basis;
- Ability to perform the duties of the position;
- Good work record.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist in tissue recovery, preservation, processing, and distribution, working collaboratively with other tissue bank staff.
- Work with the TB02 to ensure adherence to Health Canada Regulations, and CSA and AATB Standards for Tissue Banking in all procedures.
- Provide after hours and weekend on-call for tissue/corneal retrievals as required.
- Support front line caregivers by obtaining consent and discussing tissue donation with families in crisis during stressful, highly emotional times.
- Obtain authorization/consent for donation of tissues, from families/next-of-kin for deceased donors and patients for living donors.
- Liaises with local and other provincial multi-disciplinary health care facilities/professionals to assist in determining donor eligibility of each potential donor.
- Consult with coroners, pathologists and family physicians in the coordination and retrieval of tissues.
- Assist the TB02 in completing medical chart reviews, medical/social/behavioral screening (DRAI), and physical examination to determine eligibility for tissue donation.
- Assist in the organization of recovery supplies and equipment, arrange transportation if required, and book operating room.
- Assist the TB02 with the surgical retrieval of human tissue for transplantation within the Province of New Brunswick.
- Work with precision instrumentation and air powered surgical equipment used in the recovery and processing of human tissue, under sterile conditions for long periods of continuous work hours.
- Assist in the processing of bone/tissue.
- Ensure documentation, data entry, storage and appropriate quality control measures are adhered to.
- Participate in quality assurance activities and quality control measures.
- Support the quality objectives, including the quality control (QC) measures, quality assurance auditing, development/revision of standard operating practices, validation of procedures, ensure tracing of the tissue from the donor to final disposition of each tissue distributed by the NBOTP-TD.
- Manage and ensure tissue requests are being met and distributed in a timely manner.
- Perform clerical duties which may include filing, chart preparation, ordering of office supplies and other tissue banking duties as required.
