Emera's subsidiaries sponsor several pension plans with combined assets of approximately $4B. The Pension Investments Team resides within Emera's Finance department and provides services to these pension plan sponsoring subsidiaries.
The Pension Investments Team's role consists of advising the various pension committees and boards and carrying out on their behalf the programs pertaining to both the investment of pension plan assets and the governance of the pension plans. This involves working with internal groups and directing external service providers, including investment managers (all assets are externally managed), to ensure the pension plans and their assets are managed in accordance with pension plan documents and policies, legislation and industry best practices.
As the Analyst, Pension Investments, you will become a key member of Emera's Pension Investments team. Reporting to the Director, Pension Investments you will work alongside the two other members of the Pension Investments Team and collaborate and consult with external service providers as well as multiple stakeholders across the Emera group of companies.
Accountabilities:
- Coordinate, perform and document the research, monitoring and due diligence activities on all the pension plan investment portfolios in accordance with the team's processes;
- Coordinate and perform the monitoring and reporting activities related to investment performance, compliance, risk and proxy voting;
- Prepare quarterly meeting materials for the various pension committees and boards;
- Conduct research and analysis to enhance the team's views on relevant aspects of the investment programs, and identify ways to improve the team's processes;
- Work on projects including asset-liability studies, manager searches and other projects pertaining to the investment management of the pension plans and other areas of governance. Provide analysis and thought leadership to shape recommendations, and prepare recommendation memos/presentations;
- Support the pension fund management including directing cash contributions, rebalancing of assets and raising cash for benefit payments;
- Support other areas related to the operations, administration and governance of the pension plans.
Periodic domestic and international travel, including to the US is required for this role. A typical year would involve roughly 20-25 days of business travel. Travel would be planned in advance.
What Skills will make you successful:
As the ideal candidate you recognize yourself in most of the following competencies, and possess or are working towards the desired skills and experience listed below:
- An undergraduate degree in a field relevant to investment management with strong academic results. Completion of a graduate degree would be considered an asset, though is not essential. Completion of, or enrollment in, the CFA program or another program relevant to pension investment management would also be considered an asset;
- Previous experience in investment manager research, monitoring and due diligence would be considered an asset; additionally, some combination of experience with financial modelling, investment/capital market research, asset-liability studies and portfolio structure reviews would be advantageous;
- Other combinations of related education and experience may be considered.
