The itinerant teacher provides both direct instruction and consultation for students who are deaf or hard of hearing (birth to high school graduation) and works collaboratively with the school based or early childhood teams. This position requires both daily travel and the ability to work in a variety of settings. This position reports to the Director of Deaf and Hard of Hearing or designate. The Itinerant Teacher - Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) is responsible for providing both direct instruction in areas of the Developmental Skills Inventory (DSI) - DHH, and consultation in support of children and youth who are Deaf or hard of hearing. This individual works collaboratively as a part of the educational team and/or early learning team. Staff will engage a blended service delivery model encompassing both direct service and virtual services as required.

As an Itinerant for Deaf and Hard of Hearing, your work will focus on your application of the 7 Determinants of the School Development Model which are: Wellness and Positive Relationships; Optimal Learning Environments; Instructional Practice; Assessment Practices; Collective Efficacy; Evidence-based Decision Making, and Teachers as Learners. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • A high Level of American Sign Language is preferred.
  • Successful completion of American Sign Language Proficiency Interview (ASLPI) will be required.
  • Valid Newfoundland and Labrador Teacher Certification
  • Master's degree in Education of Students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing or equivalent
  • Competency to teach the Developmental Skills Inventory for students who are Deaf or hard of hearing
  • Experience working with students who are Deaf or hard of hearing, including those with multiple exceptionalities with an understanding of cultural awareness
  • Experience teaching in a variety of settings (e.g., school, home, early learning centers) and facilitate a culture of shared responsibility and partnership in promoting the learning and well-being of learners who are Deaf or hard of hearing
  • Commitment to an inclusive culture that honors collaboration and partnerships with families, colleagues, and other professional partners
  • Experience working in a virtual learning environment via google meet, zoom, teams, etc
  • Knowledge of assistive technology and hearing devices
  • Competence in listening and spoken language development
  • Competence in sign language development
  • Knowledge of child and adolescent development, including birth to high school graduation
  • Experience with assessment, writing effective goals, program planning and delivery of instruction
  • Ability to work collaboratively with all team members including APSEA and other community partners
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills creating ongoing professional learning opportunities for members of the school community to enhance the learning and well-being of learners who are Deaf or hard of hearing
  • Good organizational/time management skills
  • Ability to document and maintain records and student files and troubleshoot technical issues on site and remotely
  • Ability to use Google Applications ranging from Google Meet to File Sharing and virtual meeting spaces

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor of Education and Master's Degree in Education for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (equivalencies will be considered)
  • Membership of good standing for the Canadian Association of Educators for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing is an asset
  • Valid driver's license and regular travel with personal vehicle; may require overnight stays and other travel as required (air, ferry, etc)

Annual Teacher Salary Scale contained within the NLTA Provincial Collective Agreement and benefits contained within the agreement.
