Job Summary
The Pastoral Care Clinician identifies, organizes and assists with pastoral care and ethics services for patients, residents and clients of acute care, long term care and community programs. Support services include visitation, pastoral care, grief and bereavement, and crisis intervention in emergencies. The Pastoral Care Clinician assists and supports community clergy in their involvement with patients and families; provides compassionate spiritual care in a multifaith and multicultural context; liaises within a comprehensive network of internal disciplines, programs, and external agencies that facilitate the continuum of care; supports and participates in discipline-specific education and liaises with educational organizations; participates and represents the discipline of pastoral care in team meetings; participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of approved Pastoral Care and Ethics goals, objectives and strategies; and participates in organizational accountability systems such as workload measurement, written reports, and performance review sessions. The Pastoral Care Clinician will also assist with the Ethics program of NL Health Services.

Fine finger precision work, sitting, standing, walking, and driving are regularly required.
Visual concentration or alertness is constantly required while counselling. Pastoral care requires eye contact and focus on the client/patient/resident, observing body language, surroundings and being aware of the patient/client/resident's safety or Clinician's safety.
Auditory concentration is constantly required when counselling individuals in noisy areas or when counselling weak/ill clients who speak softly or may have ailments restricting their ability to talk.
Alertness to the health and safety of others is constantly required for the emotional and spiritual health of clients, patients, residents, family members and other staff.
Lack of control over the work pace occurs when emergency issues arise, deadlines and time pressures exist.
Job Qualifications
Master's degree in theology, Ministry, Pastoral Studies or a related field, and clinical pastoral training as accredited by the Canadian Association of Spiritual Care (CASC), or as approved by the employer, is required.
Approved formal ministry designation is required.
Knowledge of pastoral care and counselling needs for patients/clients within long-term care, rehabilitation and community.
Knowledge and ability to provide pastoral care to clients with cognitive impairments.
Knowledge of mental health and addictions issues and how it relates to pastoral care needs.
Knowledge and ability to plan regularly scheduled spirituality discussion sessions suitable for a multi-faith context.
Demonstrated strong communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to function as an educator and facilitator.
Demonstrated ability to work with a high degree of independence and initiative.
Demonstrated strong time management skills.
Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
A satisfactory record of work performance and attendance is required.
