The Department of Natural Resources and Energy Development is seeking an individual to join the Fish and Wildlife Branch as a Wildlife Biologist, in Fredericton.

As a member of the Big Game and Furbearer team, reporting to the section manager, the selected candidate will be responsible for contributing to New Brunswick's deer management program.

The responsibilities of this position include developing standards for the collection and analysis of deer population data. Responsibilities also involve developing and recommending annual antlerless deer hunting permit quotas, including data compilation and analysis to derive population indices. Additionally, the selected candidate will be required to utilize modeling tools for the effective management of deer populations and harvests.

This position will represent the department at inter-departmental and national meetings. The selected candidate will provide input, advice, and departmental positions on human interactions with wildlife/deer that are of shared concern. The Wildlife Biologist will also work with stakeholders, partners, and public citizens on deer management planning issues and initiatives and will communicate with the public to provide information on government initiatives and management issues of public concern.

Responsibilities include reviewing, revising, and drafting policies and regulatory changes to control and regulate the harvest, possession, and trade of deer. The selected candidate will build and maintain productive working relationships with other provincial government departments, other jurisdictions, and academic institutions to develop approaches and techniques to solve shared problems, evaluate deer issues of mutual concern, and generate research results to address deer management challenges.

Other related duties and projects may be assigned as required.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS: A Bachelor of Science in Biology, Wildlife Management, or a related Natural Resources Management field; and a minimum of five (5) years of experience in wildlife management. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

NOTE: In the event that this competition poses difficulties in recruiting a qualified candidate, a covering off appointment at a lower level may be made. In that case, candidates with less than the required related years of experience may also be considered.

ASSET QUALIFICATION(S): Preference may be given to candidates that demonstrate experience in one or more of the following: dynamic population models; Geographic Information Systems; wildlife immobilization equipment and procedures; drafting internal communications, reports, briefings, and regulations; supervisory experience. Subject to the response to this competition, candidates may be required to demonstrate on their application one or more of the asset qualifications in addition to the essential qualifications in order to be given further consideration.

  • Specialized subject matter expertise and knowledge in the field of biology and the ability to apply that knowledge in a variety of work situations;
  • Knowledge of applicable legislation and the department's policies and procedures;
  • Ability to use office technology, software and applications, including Microsoft Office;
  • Planning and organizing skills;
  • Written and spoken communication skills.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: The successful candidate must be prepared to: travel within and outside of the province as require; work extended hours as required, including evenings, weekends, and some overnight stays; conduct terrestrial field work including performing physically demanding tasks, working in all seasons and weather conditions, and travelling by vehicle, aircraft, watercraft, all-terrain vehicle (ATV), and snowmobile as required; wear and use protective safety clothing and equipment; work with a high degree of independence and judgment; possess a valid class 5 driver's licence as issued by the Province of New Brunswick, or equivalent; and obtain a pre-exposure vaccination for the rabies virus.

SALARY: $65,936 to $92,092 per annum
