Purpose

The Senior Manager, Internal Control GBM&T , International Banking, plays a crucial role in planning, operating, monitoring, and enhancing controls to ensure the success of the first line of defense in managing non-financial risks. This position involves promoting a globally consistent, customer-focused, and performance-oriented culture, ensuring policies and procedures reflect global compliance standards, coordinating regulatory changes, developing and delivering training programs, reporting and escalating material issues, assisting on specific projects, developing trusted relationships with business lines, identifying trends and gaps.

What You'll Do:

- Risk Management and Compliance

  • Provide support and subject matter expertise to the GBM&T businesses as it relates to compliance, regulatory, and risk topics
  • Helps create risk awareness with the first line of defense on non-financial risks, controls, and supervision procedures
  • Review potential findings by internal reviewers (Audit, QA, Compliance Testing etc…) by working with 1A to formulate responses including issues wording, severity, ownership, establish action plans, and due dates
  • Manage, track, and facilitate remediation efforts for 1A owned testing and audit action plans
  • Assist relevant business units in regulatory examinations and inquiries from regulatory bodies
  • Update WSPs as necessary in coordination with compliance groups
  • Create and maintain procedures and guidance to operationalize compliance policies, internal processes, and controls for new businesses or changes to businesses
  • Act as the escalation point for incidents (e.g., delays in signing off daily P&L, errors, disputes), investigate and remediate as necessary
  • Identify and escalate Operational Risk Events (OREs) and Self-Identified Issues (SII) including root cause analysis, required action plans, and follow ups to ensure action plans are implemented
  • Provide subject matter expertise in the various risk assessments on behalf of the 1A (e.g., CRCA, Risk Identification, Scenario Analysis and RCSA) and assist remediate action items identified in the process
  • Partner with Legal and Compliance to conduct an impact assessment and assisting in project management for changes to existing and proposed new legislation, regulatory announcements, and industry practices
  • Stay current and be compliant with internal policies and procedures to ensure the adequacy, adherence to, and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls
  • Provide ongoing reporting on and escalation of material issues to management relating to monitoring and testing results, internal audit/regulatory review results
  • Assists on specific projects (e.g., special investigations, regulatory initiatives etc...) as well as the application of the Bank's risk appetite and risk culture in day-to-day activities and decisions
  • Pro-actively identifies potential violations of regulatory requirements, ethical conduct, internal policies and procedures, in a timely manner and makes recommendations to mitigate business, compliance and operational risk
  • Maintains deep knowledge & understanding of industry issues and practices, regulatory requirements and associated changes

-Stakeholder Management and Coordination

  • First point of contact and coordination for internal and third-party testing of the businesses, including audit reviews, compliance testing reviews, first line testing, and other ad-hoc testing and reviews
  • Build, cultivate and deepen cross functional stakeholder relationships to enable increased speed and efficiency in resolving issues
  • While maintaining the appropriate oversight function, develops trusted relationships with the business lines/countries through advice and counsel on how to implement into the design of their products, programs, policies and procedures
  • Identifies trends and/or gaps across businesses in the portfolio and reports findings with recommendations on how to improve the effectiveness of first line controls to the Director and Senior Management

-Training and Development

  • Assists to develop and deliver on on-going training programs
  • Provides point-in-time training to the businesses on emerging issues, regulatory trends, and industry best practices

-Operational

  • Manage and oversee trader and salesperson authorization process through the issuance and refresh of trader and salesperson authorization letters
  • Conduct all activities in accordance with our Values, Scotiabank Code of Conduct, risk appetite and risk culture

What You'll Bring:

  • Post-secondary education with relevant experience in the financial services industry, preferably within a capital markets or treasury business line, Compliance, Operations and Audit or risk management
  • An understanding of the regulatory framework as well as global regulatory and industry trends relevant to corporate banking, investment banking, capital markets businesses and Treasury
  • Strong knowledge of corporate banking businesses, capital markets and treasury products, services and operating models.
  • Familiarity with global regulatory and industry trends relevant to large, global capital market and treasury operations
  • Ability to learn, adapt and remain resilient in a dynamic regulatory and business environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Spanish are required, Portuguese is an asset
  • An enquiring mind, sound judgment and a strategic thinker who can, when appropriate, be tactical and pragmatic
  • Experience with providing insights to and interacting with the business
  • Experience using analytics to identify areas of risk and opportunities for improvement

Work Arrangement:

  • Dynamic, fast paced office-based environment.
  • Occasional travel may be required.
  • Office work hours may be long and varied due to tight timeframes and the dynamic environment of capital market activities, and due to different time zones in order to provide support to multiple locations.
