Position description

The Application Support Consultant (ASC) participates in the research and analysis of software application needs and problems for users; provides assistance, advice, training, problem solving, and technical information to users regarding the use of software applications. They maintain a current, in-depth knowledge of applications deployed by the University, and effectively transfer knowledge to a wide range of users. They provide 'best practice' recommendations in regard to the use of relevant software applications in the educational sector.

The ASC provides services including business process evaluation and redesign, and develops specifications and related test plans, training, and assistance on custom projects, for both internal and external clients. The ASC provides Project Management expertise and manages relevant projects using industry standard project management software.

Position Responsibilities

  • Actively participate as a project team member or Project Manager in the testing and implementation of new systems
  • Confer with appropriate managers regarding program changes and problems
  • Provide training sessions for users in the operation of computer and communications equipment, system applications, and software applications
  • Assist in the development of course modules and training materials to train end-users in the use of complex integrated software applications
  • Conduct internal educational courses as needed
  • Evaluate and occasionally challenge existing business processes and redesign them in cooperation with end users
  • Create business process documentation as part of a project
  • Help to prepare and update user manuals
  • Evaluate business technology needs (hardware and software)
  • Evaluate and recommend appropriate software or services and helps implement them meeting business needs
  • Participate in client meetings and provide expertise on projects to address tasks including developing client training strategies, conducting business requirements analysis, and designing and developing client solutions
  • Evaluate with users new or changing application or systems access needs and coordinate implementation with appropriate staff in Computing Services
  • Document application problems and try to identify solutions
  • Perform related duties as assigned
  • Has knowledge of, and experience with:
    • Information systems terminology, concepts, functions, policies, and procedures
    • Modern office methods, practices, and procedures
    • The proper use and operation of equipment, software packages, system applications, word processing, and spreadsheet, database and other related software
  • Has ability to:
    • Continually learn and utilize sophisticated software applications
    • Communicate effectively in both oral and written form
    • Learn user's operations and systems
    • Remain current with end-user hardware and software applications
    • Quickly identify problems or situations, evaluate problem causes and take appropriate action for resolution
    • Prepare routine reports
    • Work independently with minimal supervision
    • Establish and maintain effective work relationships with all members of the community
  • Supervisory responsibilities
    • Occasional Student supervision
  • Key relationships and contacts
    • Day to day personal contact with all members of the University community
    • Maintain contacts with software vendors
    • Frequent contact with external clients
  • Decision-making, problem-solving
    • Ability to prioritize and handle multiple competing tasks
    • Strong analytical skills with high technical aptitude
    • Business process reengineering based on proven principles
    • Ability to assess technical and user requirements and recommend solutions
  • Continuing Study
    • Stay current on all relevant IT related topics, mostly through self study
  • Accountability
    • Responsible for problem analysis, resolution and documentation
  • Working Conditions
    • Must move around campus, and also off campus as required to service external users
    • Must be able deal with challenging users and situations
  • Schedule, hours
    • Normal hours are 8:30 - 4:30 during the academic year and 8:30 - 4:00 during the summer
    • Some overtime hours may be required at times

Qualifications/skills

  • A University degree in Computer Science, Business Management is required
  • Extensive knowledge of Office 365 as a designer, implementer and end user is a requirement
  • Proven, formal project management experience is a requirement
  • Two years of related experience is required
  • Experience in an educational setting is an asset
  • Strong customer service focus, and ability to work effectively in a team or independently
  • Ability to prioritize work orders in a multi-tasking, high-interruption environment
  • Ability to communicate with clients in user-friendly language

Nice to Have Skills

  • Experience with the Administration of Sharepoint and/or Microsoft Tenant Administration
