Emera Newfoundland & Labrador (ENL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Emera Inc. (EMA- TXS), is responsible for operating and maintaining the 500-megawatt HVdc Maritime Link Project. The Maritime Link transmits energy between the island of Newfoundland to Nova Scotia. With office locations in both provinces, ENL is committed to ensuring that the Maritime Link transmits clean, renewable energy for Nova Scotia. The Maritime Link primarily consists of two switchyards, two HVdc converter stations and adjoining substations, 400km of overhead transmission lines, two transition compounds, two grounding sites and two 170km submarine cables.

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Engineering, the Engineer, Transmission Assets will play a critical role in ensuring the reliability and performance of key energy infrastructure. The successful candidate joins us at a time where inspection and maintenance strategies for the Maritime Link are evolving. You will have the opportunity to drive efficiencies and improvements, making a mark across our assets including transmission lines, submarine cables and HVDC converter stations.

Key elements of this role include:

  • Accountability for the overhead transmission line inspection, maintenance, and vegetation management program strategy execution
  • Support submarine cable and HVDC converter station related activities, including periodic inspections, planned and unplanned outages
  • Participate in remote engineer on-call support including; troubleshooting, root cause analysis, related reports, communicating lessons learned as required
  • Champion ENL's Capital Program including capital applications, progress tracking, and forecasting, as well as project manage individual operations and capital initiatives from initiation to implementation
  • Periodic updates of appropriate asset maintenance plans to ensure alignment with actual practice and drive evolution of maintenance methodologies
  • Supervise employees and/or contractors working on assigned projects and tasks as required
  • Keep up to date with industry development, standards, regulations, and codes
  • Fully participate and engage in ENL's safety and environment programs and support ongoing initiatives such as Strategic Asset Management


What skills will make you successful?

As the ideal candidate you recognize yourself in most of the following competencies, and possess or are working towards the desired skills and experience listed below:

  • You hold a bachelor's degree in engineering with a minimum of 5 years experience in a related field, and are a registered member (P. Eng.) or are eligible for membership with Engineers Nova Scotia and The Professional Engineers and Geoscientists Newfoundland and Labrador
  • Engineering experience can come from a variety of practice backgrounds including Mechanical, Electrical or Civil with previous electric utility experience being considered an asset
  • You are a self-starter with excellent organizational and analytical skills who can function effectively in a team environment
  • Strong communication skills and a commitment to personal development are required
  • You must have a valid Driver's License, and a willingness to provide after-hours consultation and emergency power restoration work
  • Regular travel between Maritime Link Facilities and offices
