The Nurse Manager is accountable for the organization, management and leadership of the nursing department. In the absence of the Administrator/Director of Health Care Services, the Nurse Manager assumes responsibility and acts as designate. Through the use of his/her leadership skills, management tools, and understanding of the decision making process, the Nurse Manager guides the nursing staff to achieve area specific goals that are consistent with the nursing standards, the mission statement, values, and the strategic plan of GEM Health Care Group.
- Assist the Director of Care (DOC) with interviewing, hiring, and disciplinary actions for nursing staff.
- Oversee the nursing department in the absence of the DOC.
- Foster a safe working environment for all staff and residents.
- Conduct daily rounds and maintain the daily census and vacancy reports.
- Coordinate and manage resident admissions, transfers, and related documentation.
- Act as a liaison with external agencies, including the Department of Health.
- Utilize audit data to assess and improve the quality of nursing care.
- Implement and evaluate the Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) program.
- Organize and coordinate staff orientation, education programs, and professional development.
- Develop and maintain nursing policies, procedures, and standards.
- Manage infection control programs and ensure compliance with Department of Health regulations.
- Coordinate and test emergency plans, including fire safety procedures.
- Maintain confidentiality of resident, staff, and organizational information.
- Perform other duties as required or assigned.
- Current registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Nova Scotia (CRNNS).
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
- Minimum 10 years of clinical experience.
- At least 3 years of experience in a management position.
- Experience in teaching or facilitating adult education.
- Familiarity with quality and risk management issues.
- Experience working in geriatrics is an asset.
