In this role, you will :
Responsibility 1 - Health Promotion Initiatives, education, and programming
- Provide culturally safe and competent support to integrate a Two-Eyed Seeing approach into the IPHD's health promotion strategy, including the use of traditional practices.
- Review, create, and deliver briefings, webinars and trainings, including via virtual platforms or in person.
- Address and trouble-shooting options to respond to barriers to services related to the impacts of historical trauma, lack of equity, risk perceptions, social and geographic contexts.
- Work collaboratively with provincial/territorial Creating Safe Environments (CSE) staff to support delivery of health promotion initiatives in Indigenous communities.
Responsibility 2 - Health Promotion Activities
- Apply the findings of the Indigenous Peoples Help Desk (IPHD) Health Promotion 2023 Literature Review and the co-creation of health and wellness projects identified by community leadership and supported by the CRC.
- Identify the national and provincial/territorial Indigenous organizations to foster relationships and explore potential collaboration, in partnership with CSE staff.
- Identify the health trends for the Indigenous population and potential policy implications that reflect the Indigenous social determinants of health.
- Contribute to the development of national standards for health promotion programming alongside Indigenous communities that integrate Indigenous world views of health.
Responsibility 3 - IPHD Health Promotion Team and reconciliation support
- Participate in all Indigenous Peoples Help Desk (IPHD) team meetings, learning sessions and interdepartmental meetings as relevant to the position.
- Creating and delivering learning sessions/webinars to the CSE and IPHD teams and external partners as needed.
- Participate in scheduled On-Call duties, as outlined by managerial team.
What we are looking for :
- Degree (bachelor or master) in one of the following areas: medicine, nursing, social work or public health; or formal or informal training in Complementary or Traditional Healing practices and ways.
- At least 3 years+ experience working in health programming in Indigenous communities in Canada.
- Demonstrated understanding of unique strengths and complexities that exist within Indigenous communities and the impact of colonialization on health and health outcomes.
- Experience in the provision of health or community services.
- Experience in community health programs/projects.
- Understanding of the Two-Eyed Seeing approach and its value in relation to program design and policy decisions.
- Experience in/knowledge of the Indigenous determinants of heath.
- Experience in strategic work planning to achieve team and organizational goals, and monitoring of progress towards achievement.
- Commitment to continuous cultural learning and awareness.
- Able to coordinate and foster effective working relationships with various stakeholders.
- Ability to adapt and respond to unexpected and changing work needs and to propose/apply solutions in a fast-paced environment when needed.
- Demonstrated ability to think critically and problem solve quickly with minimal support.
- Strong communication in English (written and verbal), analytic and organizational skills. French is considered an asset.
- Ability to speak Cree, Ojibway, Oji Cree, Inuktitut or other Indigenous language is highly desired.
Working Conditions :
- This is a remote position, and staff will not be required to move or work full-time from an office setting.
- Staff will be required to do occasional deployment in under resourced and isolated environments.
