JOB SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Head of the Local General Surgery Division and the Medical Director for the sector, the general surgeon treats patients of all ages with various undifferentiated and often complex problems of the digestive tube, liver, pancreas, spleen, lymph nodes, breasts, adrenal glands, thyroid, abdominal wall and skin. The general surgeon is often the first point of contact for patients receiving a cancer diagnosis, irrespective of stage. The general surgeon also participates in managing patients who are in critical condition or who have traumatic lesions.

The general surgeon evaluates urgent and non-urgent clinical situations, makes diagnoses and determines treatment options. The general surgeon manages patients' perioperative care. The surgical techniques employed in general surgery include open and minimally invasive procedures as well as upper and lower digestive endoscopies. The general surgeon also provides non-surgical treatments, particularly preventive and therapeutic interventions, as appropriate. The general surgeon directs trauma teams, performs primary and secondary patient assessments in a trauma context, and provides required surgical and non-surgical care.

The general surgeon collaborates with specialist physicians and other health professionals in delivering multidisciplinary care, in the operating room, endoscopy room, Emergency Department and inpatient and outpatient contexts.

REQUIREMENTS:

Degree from a recognized medical school and residency leading to licensure in general surgery.

A recognized medical school is a school that meets the following criteria:

  • Accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools (CACMS) or the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) (in the United States);

OR

  • Listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools with a note for Canada;
  • Experience (one to three years) considered an asset;
  • Any other combination of training and experience deemed relevant and equivalent may be considered;
  • Licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New Brunswick;
  • Active member of the Canadian Medical Protective Association or equivalent liability insurance association;
  • Member of the New Brunswick Medical Society;
  • Privileges with Vitalité Health Network;
  • Registration with New Brunswick Medicare;
  • Ability to remain calm;
