Position description

The Wellness Strategist is a key leader in the development of mental health, and harm reduction programming at Mount Allison University. This person helps to guide the development, implementation, and continuation, on a cross-institutional basis, of programming and outreach efforts so as to further the progress of student wellness literacy, education, and awareness on campus. Understanding that wellness education is not owned by a single individual but requires large-scale recognition, support, and action. The incumbent works with and advises a variety of stakeholders, including students, staff, faculty, and external partners to foster campus-wide action and collaboration.

Position Responsibilities

  • Help to develop and advance sustainable educational outreach campaigns targeted at key areas of student need in collaboration with other Student Affairs staff based on related research support and analysis;
  • As decided with their supervisor, sit on committees or groups with mandates to support the wellbeing and/or safer substance use of students. This may include the Student of Concern Case Team, Student Alcohol and Substance Use Committee, and committees dedicated to updating the Mental Health Strategy.
  • Coordinate, in conjunction with key staff members, such as those in Student Life, programming, strategic awareness campaigns and training aimed at promoting mental wellbeing and safer substance use practices for students;
  • Review and make recommendations relating to the use of alcohol and substances on campus in collaboration with the Alcohol and Substance Use Committee.
  • Collect and review feedback and/or data to determine the effectiveness of the impact of ongoing projects to assess program efficacy;
  • Identify strategic external partners and work collaboratively with them and university stakeholders to facilitate partnerships that enhance effective student wellness service delivery, awareness and promotion;
  • Collaborate with other stakeholders to maintain and suggest updates to institutional mental health and wellness strategies and procedures on campus;
  • Develop, monitor, and lead trained peer supporters and mental health champions (e.g. NavigateMtA) who will encourage positive mental health activities and promote self-care.
  • Create resources to deliver and/or coordinate the delivery of group sessions and workshops on a wide range of wellness and personal management topics which help students adjust to a successful University experience;
  • Act as a resource on mental health, wellness, and harm reduction campaigns to student groups, faculty, and staff within the university community;
  • Submit reports to the Director as required throughout the year on project activities and findings.


  • Minimum of a university degree in a related discipline (e.g. Psychology, Social Work, Health Promotion, Addictions, Harm Reduction, etc.)
  • 3 years experience or advanced diploma in the field of Mental Health, Health Promotion, Addictions, Harm Reduction or recognized equivalencies preferred
  • Thorough knowledge of current theories and practices related to mental health and harm reduction
  • Experience in coordination of outreach and/or educational programs; experience with hands-on teaching methods preferred
  • Excellent program/project management and coordination skills, incl. ability to track and evaluate program/project progress and success
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated initiative and creativity; must be self-motivated
  • An understanding of the needs of post-secondary education-aged students
  • Ability to recognize the sensitivity of issues and maintain strict confidentiality
  • Experience and knowledge of programs and services in an educational institution is an asset
  • Ability to work successfully within a team environment and independently
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint coupled with online research skills
