The opportunity:
The Efficiency Specialist role within the Affordable Multifamily Housing Team is responsible for technical and administrative support. The position will require working primarily with program applicants in the new Affordable Rental Construction pilot and guiding them through the program. The Efficiency Specialist will also be required to review project documentation and perform data entry as well as complete technical reviews of energy models for both retrofits and new construction projects to help our clients assess the best ways to save energy. Other responsibilities include coordinating energy audits, producing customer-facing and internal reports, performing site visits and quality assurance, and providing support for other members of the Affordable Multifamily Housing team. A candidate with a working knowledge of building science fundamentals in multi-unit residential buildings is particularly desirable.
- Responsible for analyzing and reviewing industry-standard energy models (e.g., CanQuest/eQuest, H2K, RETScreen, etc.).
- Responsible for working knowledge of the National Building Code (NBC) and National Energy Code for Buildings (NECB) and how it applies to energy models.
- Assisting in the development and improvement of program materials and processes for the pilot.
- Responsible for ensuring new participants have a full understanding of both the commitments and expectations of the program process.
- Completing participant engagement and follow-ups.
- Assisting with project agreement development and administration; ensuring compliance with established regulations.
- Responsible within areas of specialty (and within a team context), be responsible for ensuring quality and accuracy of technical work.
- Completing measurement and verification of energy-saving measures throughout each project's lifecycle.
- Executing evaluator and verifier recommendations for the program.
What Will Help You Succeed?
- The ideal candidate should have a working knowledge of building science principles.
- A bachelor's degree or diploma in Engineering Technology, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Other relevant training such as Certified Energy Managers, Certified Measurement and Verification professionals, etc. are considered assets.
- Experience with and proficiency with all MS Office applications (including Teams)
- Familiarity with whole building energy modeling software (H2K, eQuest, HAP, and/or IES VE) are considered assets.
- Ability to take on new opportunities and challenges, with a passion to continue to develop and grow.
- The ideal candidate should have excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills and have.
- The ideal candidate should have the ability to prioritize deliverables and work independently or within a team.
- Must own a vehicle and be willing to travel within Nova Scotia.
What to expect in your first several weeks on the job:
In the first week, expect to:
- Work with the Program Manager, Business Development Manager, and other team members to learn about the existing Affordable Multifamily Housing Retrofit Program and the standard program procedures and learn more about the Affordable Rental Construction Pilot.
- Read and review program documents, procedures, and tracking systems.
- Meet colleagues from other teams and departments to learn more about the organization.
In the first month, expect to:
- Begin to take on project reviews, with support from the Affordable Multifamily Housing team.
- Become familiar with and begin tracking projects.
- Learn more about team and/or department initiatives.
- Continue self-directed and peer learning to develop knowledge of energy codes, energy modeling best practices, and energy efficiency measures in new construction and retrofit projects.
In the first three months, expect to:
- Manage projects, including technical reviews of energy model submissions.
- Participate in the program evaluation process.
- Contribute to team/department initiatives.
- Work with your manager to develop individual learning/development goals.
