Our Team

Our Newfoundland and Labrador Operations are an integrated mining, milling, and processing operation. Nickel concentrate from the fly-in, fly-out Voisey's Bay operation is shipped to our state-of-art Long Harbour Processing Plant where it is refined into low-carbon and high-purity nickel rounds, cobalt rounds and copper cathodes.

The Reliability Team leads Vale's efforts to become a more stable and reliable operation, utilizing reliability tools and strategies to achieve long-term goals. Members of this team include Reliability Advisors and Engineers of a variety of disciplines that support Operations and Maintenance teams while collaborating with each other and contributing towards initiatives designed to deliver best in class Reliability practices.

The Opportunity

Vale recognizes the Impacts and Benefits Agreements with the Innu Nation and the Nunatsiavut Government in which Innu and Inuit workers have first preference for employment at the Voisey's Bay Mine Site. This is guided by an adjacency principle that first gives preference to those who live on the coast of Labrador, followed by those residing in the rest of Labrador, those residing on the island of the province, followed by the rest of Canada.

Next, priority will be given to Newfoundland and Labrador residents. We also welcome those who are willing to relocate back home and those looking to make NL their permanent home.

We are currently seeking a Reliability Engineering Student – Fall 2024 to join our Reliability Department in St. John's, NL. This is a 4-month fixed term position. This position will be supporting Voisey's Bay on a Monday – Friday schedule working out of the St. John's office.

In this position you will be working with reliability engineers and advisors to improve the reliability of equipment throughout the plant by assisting to create maintenance plans, reliability initiatives such as FMEAs, RCAs and equipment condition monitoring initiatives, and other day-to-day activities. Additionally, in this position, you will:

  • Assist in Identifying and addressing asset reliability issues in the operations ensuring best practices for asset uptime are standardized and shared across the business.
  • Work to ensure compliance to the reliability program and that asset reliability risks are identified and mitigated.
  • Assist in providing recommendations on strategic investment in equipment, technology, and initiatives to optimize asset value.
  • Collaborate with supervisors and reliability team in development of budgets as well as production and shutdown plans.
  • Assist in developing the Asset Strategy by identifying asset criticality to the business, setting service strategy based on performance required, and driving reliability and cost-effective lifecycle management using tools like RCM and FMEACs.
  • Develop the work packages for asset strategies in developing bill of materials, task lists, measuring points, etc.
  • Design the work methods to support the service strategies and foreseeable corrective work activities through the life cycle of the asset. This includes optimizing task method and sequencing of work to provide the safest and most efficient execution of work.
  • Set strategy and work packages for integrity assessments and conducts a baseline assessment as part of setting strategy.
  • Work with site representatives to determine operating standards and mix of preventative and predictive tasks required to optimize the reliable output of the assets.
  • Conduct root cause analysis on systemic reliability issues and one-off significant events.
  • Determine cost advantages of alternatives and develops actions plants that provide for reliable processes and assets to avoid failures.
  • Support the sites with 3rd party assessments/audits ensuring that critical operating and maintenance strategies are executed as per design.
  • In-conjunction with Procurement optimize inventory levels to manage business risk to an acceptable level with a focus on minimizing levels of slow/non-moving inventory.

About You

Education:

  • Currently enrolled as a student in a Mechanical Engineering (Co-op) Program.

Skills:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong analytical, planning, organizational and time management skills
  • Software skills in of MS Office products
    • Previous experience with SAP will be considered an asset
