Under the direction of the Property Manager, the Janitor is responsible for maintaining a high level of cleanliness, orderliness, and safety in his/her assigned building(s). Furthermore, the Janitor provides a sense of security.

Responsibilities
  • Review security report at the beginning of shift and take appropriate action including following NSPHA Cleaning standards and/or forward reports to the appropriate staff.
  • Perform inspections throughout the entire building to determine the cleanliness and security of the building.
  • Ensure that the front entrance and public areas related to the interior and exterior are safe and clean.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of front entrance and public areas related to the interior and exterior, common areas, appliances in laundry rooms, interior/exterior elevators, stairwells, and stair railings, …
  • Wash, spray buff or strip and wax all flooring as required or directed in accordance with established service standards.
  • Clean vacant units prior to occupancy.
  • Prepare garbage and refuse for removal, clean garbage rooms/chutes according to established service standards.
  • Perform winter snow and ice clearance duties such as but not limited to, salting, or shovelling of snow from steps, landings, emergency exits, ramps and walkways as required.
  • Complete work orders and material requisitions as required and report maintenance requirements to the site office and report any unusual events to Property Manager.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Grade 12 or high school equivalent plus two years' janitorial experience.
  • Ability to read and understand work orders, safety documents, WHMIS materials, guidelines, and service standards.
  • Ability to convey written messages such as daily logs and maintenance recommendations.
  • Ability to understand and operate equipment involved in cleaning while using good body mechanics.
  • Ability to properly handle cleaning chemicals.
  • Knowledge of occupational health and safety.

Assets:

  • Possess a valid Nova Scotia driver's license with access to a reliable vehicle for work purposes.
  • Emergency First Aid and WHMIS certifications.

Competencies required at this level of work are Interpersonal skills, Teamwork, Organizational skills, Client Orientation, and Initiative.

Equivalency

An equivalent combination of training, education and experience may be considered.
