Steele Hotels is seeking a Payroll and Benefits Manager to permanently join our team in St. John’s, NL.

The Payroll & Benefits Manager will work closely with the Finance Team, along with hotel management to ensure the accuracy of payroll procedures. This position will be the main payroll and benefit contact for all properties within Steele Hotels. The ideal candidate enjoys working in a fast-paced environment and possesses a positive "can-do" attitude. They would possess a high level of professionalism including integrity and confidentially, excellent time management skills, coupled with a strong work ethic, critical thinking skills, and a keen eye for detail.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and complete the accurate and timely payroll processing for over 500+ employees, including salary, wages, bonuses, commissions, benefits, and deductions.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, provincial, and local payroll regulations and tax laws.
  • Review payroll transactions, including timesheets, adjustments, and corrections.
  • Collaborate with HR, finance, and other departments to ensure accurate employee data, including new hires, terminations, and changes in compensation.
  • Responsible for payroll-related legislative compliance across multiple provinces with employment standards, CRA, collective agreements, and other regulatory bodies
  • Address employee inquiries and concerns regarding payroll matters, including pay discrepancies, tax withholdings, and garnishments.
  • Prepare and distribute payroll reports to management and finance departments.
  • Assist in the implementation of payroll-related policies, procedures, and initiatives.
  • Responsible for processing, including but not limited to T4s, WorkplaceNL filling, ROEs, employee benefits, and RRSPs.
  • Calculate retroactive pay, various bonuses, and other compensation elements as required.
  • Other activities that support the month-end financial statement and year-end process.
  • Prepare monthly journal entries; and account and payroll reconciliations
  • Stay current with industry trends, regulations, and best practices in payroll administration

Qualifications, Skills, and Attributes:

  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field.
  • Previous experience (5-10 years) in payroll processing, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or leadership role.
  • Canadian Payroll Certification such as Payroll Compliance Practitioner is required, and PLP is an asset.
  • Experience working with multiple payrolls with employee numbers over 500, including managing a large number of seasonal employees.
  • In-depth knowledge of payroll principles, regulations, and tax laws.
  • Proficiency in payroll software and systems. Knowledge of Payworks is an asset.
  • Knowledge of working with collective agreements is an asset
  • Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, excellent organization, communication and time management skills.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • High level of integrity and discretion when handling confidential information
