Altera Infrastructure is a leading international marine services provider for the crude oil transportation and offshore storage to the offshore oil production industry, focused on the ownership and operation of shuttle tankers in offshore oil regions of the North Sea, Brazil and the East Coast of Canada.

Altera has an office in St. John's Newfoundland, to manage the existing regional contracts with Oil Companies of the Grand Banks East Coast Canada Project (ECC). Altera provides shuttle tankers services for offshore crude oil loading and transportation at Hibernia, Terra Nova, White Rose and Hebron offshore oil fields. The St. John's division operates under Altera (Atlantic) Management ULC.

Position Summary

We have an immediate opening for a Marine HR/Payroll Advisor on a full-time permanent basis out of our St. John's, Newfoundland location.

Altera is looking for a highly organized and motivated individual who brings positivity to the team while following the directions and procedures as set out by management. The ability to thrive in a deadline driven environment while delivering high quality service is an integral component of this role.

The Marine HR/Payroll Advisor position is a key role in the Altera organization working on the fore front towards our ships ensuring a safe, sustainable, and cost-efficient operation.

Major Responsibilities

  • Work in accordance with Altera Business ethics and code of conduct and support the Company vision and values.
  • Administer seafarer's payroll includes preparing all employee payroll related items including regular pay, expenses, and special payments such as bonuses/allowances.
  • Verify accuracy for statements of earnings for employees, indicating gross and net salaries and deductions such as taxes, union dues, and garnishments.
  • Administer employee group insurance plan and retirement plans.
  • Ensure compliance with federal regulations, including tax and labour laws.
  • Ensure payroll accuracy of payroll related filings and supporting documentation, such as year-end tax statements, pension, Records of Employment, and other remittances and statements.
  • Resolve payroll discrepancies and answer employee questions about payroll and benefits.
  • Provide appropriate information to the finance and accounting department in respect of manning / payroll related matters.
  • Responsible for manning of the Shuttle and Storage fleet, including planning of personnel, facilitate recruitment and internal promotions for operating vessels and new builds/project in accordance with relevant company procedures.
  • Responsible for ensuring crew competence and qualifications are according to industry regulations, i.e. STCW convention, flag state regulations, customer, and Altera requirements.
  • Participate in Ship Team emergency response team.
  • Contact for 'After Office Hours' for their respective Teams as necessary.

Requirements, Knowledge, Skills

  • Diploma/Degree in Maritime/Business Administration, or Human Resources required
  • Knowledge and experience of payroll and benefit processing procedures for semi-monthly payroll
  • Strong attention to detail and able to demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Previous experience with industry regulations in the marine or transportation environment considered an asset
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft
  • Strong Organization and time management skills
  • Ability to build strong interpersonal relations and work as part of team.
  • Ability to adapt to a changing environment.
  • Initiative and willingness to take on additional responsibilities
