Marine Atlantic is currently looking for a Respectful Workplace Specialist to work with our Human Resources department. The successful candidate may choose to work from North Sydney, Port aux Basques, or St. John's.

The Human Resources Department is responsible for developing and implementing strategies in the areas of employee and leadership development, labour relations, diversity and inclusion, total compensation, employee development, and workforce and succession planning, all to foster strong employee engagement and support Marine Atlantic's corporate strategic objectives. It also ensures effective HR corporate processes including hiring, training, performance management, compensation, pension, benefits, and human resources policy.


Reporting to the Vice-President of Human Resources and working in collaboration with with Marine Atlantic's office of Corporate Counsel, the Respectful Workplace Specialist will serve as a key independent resource to lead and manage responsibilities associated with Marine Atlantic's Workplace Harassment and Violence Policy as well as other initiatives to prevent and/or resolve issues associated with discrimination and conflict in the workplace.


Additional Key Areas of Responsibility


• Acts as Designated Recipient for all employee reports of occurrences of harassment or violence in the workplace. The incumbent is required to work within the legislated framework, legal precedents and conflict resolution practices to guide and manage each phase of dispute resolution for each occurrence and utilize professional knowledge and experience to determine approaches to each situation.
• Acts as a mediator between parties to attempt to find mutually agreeable resolutions to complaints of harassment.
• When requested by departmental managers, acts as a facilitator or mediator employing various approaches to dispute resolution based on education and experience to proactively address incidents of conflict before they become formal occurrences.
• As Designated Recipient, identifies short- and long-term strategies and actions to address employee concerns and works with managers and leaders across the organization to ensure risks of harassment or violence for employees are mitigated.
• In cases in which an external resource is engaged as part of the dispute resolution process, selects the appropriate resource in compliance with legislated requirements, ensures the resource has appropriate instruction and information, and monitors the process for procedural fairness and to ensure deliverables are appropriate to the circumstances.
• Maintains Marine Atlantic's policies relating to workplace harassment and violence and makes policy changes as necessary based on industry best practices, experience, and legislative changes.
• Creates, manages and monitors confidential records relating to workplace harassment and violence. Responsible for internal reporting to Executive and Board of Directors and external reporting as required by legislation. Monitors trends in occurrences and responds through training, policy updates, revision to workplace risk assessments, or other appropriate action.
• Develops workplace assessments in each area of the organization, identifying areas of risk for harassment and violence and developing plans to mitigate those risks.
• Provides training and leadership for the Occupational Safety and Health Policy Committee and company managers to identify risk factors contributing to workplace harassment and violence.
• Conducts regular workplace audits to determine effectiveness of measures implemented to reduce the risk of harassment and violence in the workplace and to monitor and evaluate preventive measures.
• Serves as resource and support for Psychological Health and Safety Advisory Committee.
• Provides support and advice to employees on a confidential basis with respect to processes and recommendations to address conflict, as well as available individual support. Develops and maintains a comprehensive repository of employee supports and resources for employees impacted by harassment, violence, discrimination, domestic violence, bullying or other issues arising from conflict.
• Develops and implements training and other initiatives to educate employees and promote a safe and respectful workplace.
• Provides regular communication, promotion and awareness of relevant policies, programs, initiatives to proactively enhance knowledge of issues associated with harassment and violence prevention.

What qualifications do I need to be considered for this opportunity?

Education and Experience

• Post-secondary degree in Human Rights, Dispute Resolution, Law or other field related to conflict resolution.

AND


• Five or more years' senior level experience in Human Rights, Complaint Investigation/Dispute Resolution, Labour Relations or similar work experience.

OR

A combination of equivalent education, job-related training, and work experience in a related position.


Qualifications


• Training and/or certification in ombuds practice, negotiation, conflict management, mediation, arbitration, or labour relations.
• Demonstrated knowledge and experience in investigation and alternative dispute resolution (ADR) principles for conflict resolution.
• Excellent writing, critical thinking, presentation and communication skills.
• Empathetic listening skills and conflict resolution experience.
• Sensitivity to the needs of a diverse employee community.
• Considerable knowledge of related legislation (Canada Labour Code, Occupational Health & Safety, Canadian Human Rights and other applicable federal legislation) and industry best practices.

Please note that travel to all Marine Atlantic locations is required as part of this role.
