Position: VP, GBM Legal, Legal Department


Provides expert and high quality legal advice and counsel to Senior and Executive Management primarily within Global Banking and Markets with respect to business activities, transactions and regulatory initiatives, to ensure that business results and objectives are achieved in accordance with legal and regulatory requirements, guidelines and best practices and Scotiabank Group's overall corporate governance.


Leads and drives a customer focused culture throughout their team to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.

Provides expert advice and counsel to Senior and Executive Management with respect to the Bank's business activities and transactions by:

  1. Providing high quality legal research, analysis and advice on the most complex activities to the executive team;
  2. Identifying and assessing legal risks and developing strategies and options to mitigate risk and protect the Bank's interests;
  3. Interpreting legislation impacting the area; incorporating legislative changes into the business' policies, processes, practices and documentation;
  4. Researching legal issues of high complexity on a global, national or regional basis and informing executives on developing legal trends and their impact on operations and providing recommended courses of action;
  5. Directing the activities of external counsel in relation to all of the foregoing;
  6. Identifying, managing and resolving legal and contractual issues and concerns;
  7. Preparing, reviewing and approving legal opinions of a policy nature;
  8. Developing and maintaining strong working relationships with internal business units and senior management teams.
  • Contributes to the success of Global Banking and Markets and its clients by providing timely, high quality legal advice in relation to significant legal issues, with an emphasis on finding innovative and practical solutions to unique problems.
  • Advises on all aspects of global financial regulatory reform in terms of implementing a robust and efficient legal and regulatory framework for OTC derivatives regulation and other banking and capital markets regulatory initiatives.
  • Represents the Bank at meetings or on committees with government, public and private organizations; researches and prepares submissions to government bodies on legislation and other issues affecting the organization.
  • Directs day-to-day activities in a manner consistent with the Bank's risk culture and the relevant risk appetite statement and limits. Communicates the Bank's risk culture and risk appetite statement throughout their teams.
  • Ensures timely action is taken to effectively manage and mitigate risks, including prompt escalation of breaches of management limits or risk appetite measures as per established processes.
  • Creates an environment in which his/her team pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational risk, regulatory compliance risk, AML/ATF risk and conduct risk, including but not limited to responsibilities under the Operational Risk Management
  • Framework, Regulatory Compliance Risk Management Framework, AML/ATF Global Handbook and the Guidelines for Business Conduct.
  • Builds a high performance environment and implements a people strategy that attracts, retains, develops and motivates their team by fostering an inclusive work environment; communicating vison/values/business strategy and managing succession and development planning for the team.

Education / Experience

  • Graduate of a nationally recognized Law school.
  • Membership in the Law Society of Ontario or another province of Canada.
  • At least 15 years of experience with a major financial institution or law firm specializing in capital markets and financial service activities.
  • Broad and deep understanding of the legal and regulatory environment governing financial services activities in Canada, the United States and other G20 jurisdictions.
