Acadia is looking to fill a 13-month limited term contract for the Coordinator, African Descent and Indigenous Student Opportunity and Success. This position is a designated opportunity open only to those who identify as Black, Indigenous, or a Person of Colour (BIPOC). Priority will be given to qualified African Nova Scotian and Mi'kmaq candidates.
As the Coordinator, you will play a key role in creating and implementing programs and services that support the academic and personal success of Indigenous students and students of African descent at Acadia University. The role involves adopting a holistic approach to student support and actively engaging with the entire campus community. Building and maintaining relationships with local African Nova Scotian and Mi'kmaw communities are essential components of this position.
The Coordinator will work collaboratively with the Indigenous Programming and Recruitment Advisor, the African Descent Student Engagement Specialist, and the Black Student Enrolment Advisor to enhance the overall student experience. This includes fostering positive campus relationships, increasing enrolment and retention rates, and building strong collaborative relationships with local African Nova Scotian and Mi'kmaw communities.
Key responsibilities include:
- Develop and implement strategies for the successful transition of Indigenous and African Descent students to Acadia University.
- Provide holistic support, including 1-1 advising, to address intellectual, emotional, spiritual, physical, and mental health needs.
- Advocate for students and support interactions with relevant university stakeholders.
- Manage day-to-day functions of African Descent and Indigenous student centres, including budget oversight and staff management.
- Develop culturally relevant programs based on cultural practices and student development theories.
- Assist in the development of recruitment and retention initiatives for African Descent and Indigenous students.
- Deliver orientation and transition programming for new students.
- Mentor the Black Student's Association (BSA) and Indigenous Student's Society of Acadia (ISSA).
- Advise and support events, ensuring appropriate protocols are implemented.
- Establish and maintain strong community relationships internally and externally.
- Develop and maintain relationships with Mi'kmaw and African Nova Scotian communities and organizations.Actively engage with the Indigenous Education Advisory Council (IEAC) and the BIPOC Student Support Group.
- Identify opportunities for partnerships and educational initiatives with campus and community partners.
We are seeking a candidate who has a Bachelor's Degree in a related area with experience in program development, implementation, and management.
Experience working with Indigenous and African descent student populations.

Ability to apply creativity and recommend strategies for engagement initiatives in response to cultural and social trends.
