This is a designated competition open to Mi'kmaq and other Indigenous/Aboriginal peoples.
Although the position is located in Halifax, this role will involve working and spending time at the campuses it will support
- The Indigenous Community and Cultural Liaison Coordinator works with the Senior Advisor for Mi'kmaq and Indigenous Initiatives in NSCC Human Rights, Equity and Inclusion Services (HREI) on cultural initiatives and Anti-Racism and inclusion projects. Reporting to the Director of Student and Career Services in NSCC Central Student Affairs, this position coordinates the delivery of services that aim to create an inclusive and safe learning environment specifically for Mi'kmaq and Indigenous students.
- The Coordinator will work with Mi'kmaq communities and Indigenous organizations to ensure a smooth transition of Indigenous students into NSCC. The Coordinator will also work with Campus Student Services Teams and the student at each stage of the student life cycle (transition in, current, graduating) to provide culturally responsive supports as they manage their learning and prepare for their next career and/or educational steps. Culturally responsive supports are informed by human development and identity theories, adult education principles, knowledge of Mi'kmaq history, and Indigenous culture and governance.
- This position focuses on providing culturally relevant advising services and supports for Indigenous students who don't have an Indigenous Supports advisor as they transition into the College at the Burridge, Lunenburg, Pictou, Shelburne, eCampus, Marconi and Cumberland campuses. The Coordinator will work with Campus Student Services teams, building strong connections with Mi'kmaq Communities as well as work with Indigenous organizations such as METS, ATPEC, and MK & Nova Scotia Native Women's Association to build and support culturally responsive student services, inclusive events, and processes that recognize the unique needs of Mi'kmaq and other Indigenous students. The Coordinator will provide guidance to Central Student Services to support ongoing development of working relationships with Mi'kmaq communities in Nova Scotia.
Qualifications and Occupational Experience:
- The minimum educational qualification for this position is an undergraduate degree in a related field such as Indigenous Studies, Social Sciences, Adult Education, Social Work or Humanities.
- You have a minimum of 3 years of recent and related occupational experience in fields such as Student Affairs, Adult Education, Social Work, Indigenous Community Development, or Indigenous Youth Programming.
- Occupational experience that includes: working with Indigenous students; building strong collaborative relationships with external organizations connected with Indigenous or Mi'kmaq education; or working with Indigenous training and funding/sponsoring agencies, would be considered an asset.
- You are familiar with and comfortable or willing to learn computer applications such as the Microsoft Office Suite, (i.e. Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint), video conferencing software (e.g. Microsoft Teams, Zoom) and social media platforms (e.g, Facebook, Instagram). Experience using database applications such as PeopleSoft, LAMPS, or Banner would be considered an asset.
- You are comfortable working in a digital environment; you take responsibility for acquiring knowledge about advancing technology; and you are committed to using technology to create an exceptional student experience.
- Experience in coordinating and facilitating workshops and services would be considered an asset.
- You have experience supporting/providing service to students and prospective students.

- You show a strong commitment to community involvement such as participating in community advisory groups, citizen engagement, volunteer work at the community, regional or provincial level.

As a condition of employment, Professional Support employees at NSCC must complete a two-year (part-time) adult education program delivered by NSCC. This adult education program is a significant investment on the part of NSCC in the learning and development of new employees. To achieve regular status; all probationary, full or part-time Professional Support employees of the College must successfully complete the program within their probationary period. Term full-time Professional Support employees whose term appointment is twelve or more months are also required to participate in this program.
